In 1581, Dr. Diego Pérez de Valdivia, a clergyman and professor at the University of Barcelona, moved by the number of poor on the streets, requested the Council of One Hundred to establish an asylum.

In 1852, the Maternity and Foundling House was established within the Misericordia premises, occupying the east wing of the building. 🏠👶 On the facade of the old Chapel of Mercy, now the headquarters of the Ciutat Vella District and a bookstore, you can still see the alms box and the turnstile for orphans.

Today, the Capilla de la Misericordia is at the center of controversy. In 2019, Raval residents occupied the chapel, demanding that this space host the new CAP Raval Nord. 🏛️🤔 The fate of the project remains uncertain.

🌿 My motivation is this city! Unraveling the Secrets of Las Ramblas: From Streams to Streets! 🌊
Step back in time with me to ancient Roman and Medieval Barcelona, where the enchanting tale of Las Ramblas begins. Can you believe that beneath the bustling city once flowed a gully with a storm-fed stream, descending gracefully from the majestic Collserola mountains? 🏔️ This very stream marked the boundaries of the medieval walls, holding secrets that still echo through the centuries!
Let's delve into the captivating origins of the name "Rambla." Traveling back to the Arabic era, "Rambla" finds its roots in the term for "dry stream." The Arabs may not have stayed long, but their legacy is woven into Barcelona's essence, gifting the city with not one, but two essential names—'Rambla' and 'Raval.' 🕌
Picture the old working-class district of Raval, situated to the right of the Ramblas, signifying "outside" or "at the side" (when the walls stood tall). 🏰 The stream flowing through this district served a unique dual role—it acted as both a protective moat and, well, a not-so-glamorous sewer amusingly known as the "Caganell" or the "waste-water stream."

🏠 Casa José Genzner is located in Barcelona - Bonanova and is a single-family building with garden from 1913.

🏗 The arquitect Josep Masdeu Puigdemasa gave the house an exclusive look by finishing it with simulacrum of padded ashlars and structured with a game of volumes that combines straight lines and curves. It has a vaguely modernist touch with a noticeable classicism bias.

Especially interesting is the oval window on the ground floor, with it's two columns, and the iron tribune, that was most likely closed with leaded glass in the past. It is not listed in the City Council's heritage catalogue, but I think it should deserve a spot in there. What do you think?

The Chapel of Sant Llàtzer

This church in Plaça Pedró in Barcelona - Raval is one of the few example of Romanesque architecture in the city. It preserves a splendid apse, as well as a few Baroque painting on the ceilings.

This Romanesque church was built in the 12th century next to the hospital of Santa Maria dels Mesells and is one of the few examples of Romanesque architecture in the city. With the passing of the centuries, it has undergone several changes, and it was badly damaged by the Civil War and by its abandonment in 1913. The result today is a façade that has a particularly patched-up appearance to tell the story of its past.

⚒ The house where the modernisation started a new way of thinking about architecture.

💎 Casa Batllo - also known as House of Bones - one of Gaudí's masterpieces became in that time an extravagant place to live.

🏠 In October 1904, a wealthy industrialist of the textile sector called Josep Batlló i Casanovas commissioned Antoni Gaudí to renovate a building located at number 43 of Passeig de Gràcia avenue in Barcelona. The project was joined by two other architects representative of Catalan Modernism: Josep Maria Jujol and Joan Rubió i Bellver.

👀 It seems that the goal was to avoid straight lines completely and break rules.
If you are ever in Barcelona don't miss out your chance to see this incredible place.

I see toile de jouy in Barcelona.

Do you know what toile de jouy is?

The French "Toile de Jouy" simply means "cloth from Jouy" in English and describes a type of fabric printing. "Toile de Jouy", sometimes abbreviated to simply "toile", is a type of decorating pattern consisting of a white or off-white background on which is a repeated pattern depicting a fairly complex scene, generally of a pastoral theme such as a couple having a picnic by a lake or an arrangement of flowers.

Toiles were originally produced in Ireland in the mid-18th Century and quickly became popular in Britain and France. The term "Toile de Jouy" originated in France in the late 18th century. In the French language, the phrase literally means "cloth from Jouy-en-Josas", a town in the south-west suburbs of Paris.

🏡 What do these things have in common: a Roman street and four streams in Barcelona? Exactly the house in the middle...

🌊 There were once four major streams in Barcelona. Starting from the mountain there was the Cassoles stream (today's Avinguda Príncipe de Asturias) and that of Sant Gervasi down, which ran more or less between the streets of Balmes and Lincoln and Regàs. When they met right on Plaça Gal·la Placídia, they formed the famous Riera d'en Malla, which later enters the city via Las Ramblas.

🛣 The fourth brook was La Riera de Sant Miquel, which comes from the Cassoles brook. Today little reminds of the streams. La Riera de Sant Miquel can only be found today as the street name where this wonderful house is located. What is special is that an old Roman road from Barcelona to Sant Cugat once ran here to the left of the house.

💭 Anyone who lives here can imagine every day how the Romans once walked along the path. What a wonderful historical location right?

🏛 If you find remains of archaeological interest you are obliged to “report the BIMSA (Barcelona de Infraestructuras Municipales, SA) and the Servicio de Arqueología de Barcelona immediately. This identifies the remains and they are excavated and documented using the appropriate methodology. This means that construction must first be halted.

📃 The protocols stipulate that during excavations and archaeological remains, the municipal authorities must intervene in order to determine the nature of the finds. “With this framework agreement, the BIMSA wants to define the measures to be taken in each case. Measures would be:
📚 Study documentation of the area or element concerned;
🧹archaeological surface surveys;
📑 Carrying out archaeological studies or excavations;
🗃 and the preservation of documentary elements ”.

🏛 In doing so, it tries to preserve the archaeological and paleontological heritage of the city and prevent its destruction.
The work to be performed by approved companies must not exceed 80,000 euros (plus VAT) in the budget. If this price is exceeded, the work will be put out to tender outside of this framework contract. The companies must have a team of three people (with an archaeological director, a technical archaeologist and an assistant). The director, explaining the clauses of the framework contract, "will be responsible for archaeological surveillance and supervision during the ex*****on of the works in areas likely to contain archaeological remains."
