Zoo at the Castellar De La Frontera a short drive away. See the animals at a very close range with an opportunity to feed monkeys, birds, lemurs and goats. Astonishing selection of big cats for a small zoo. Tip: ask if anyone is currently at the nursery (this is a facility where rejected baby animals are reared).

Very beautiful and windy beaches of Tarifa (the European surfing capital).

The nearby town of San Roque created by refugees fleeing from the Rock in the wake of its seizure by Anglo-Dutch forces in 1704. Very well worth a visit on its own or to visit the DonBenitos tapas bar. Beware very steep heels for walking and very narrow streets for driving!

Hire Fiat 500, get Julio Iglesias on (yes, him, Enrique’s dad!) and you’ll arrive to La Alcaidesa in true retro style.
