If you own a property in Mallorca and want to renovate it once the summer season is over, your planning should begin several months earlier. As in my experience, the most successful renovation projects begin months before the builders ever arrive onsite. Starting early gives you time to review what is not working, make design decisions, appoint the right professionals (and get into their schedules), confirm budgets and begin sourcing the materials, furniture and finishes that will bring the whole project together.

Starting early gives you something that is often underestimated in renovation projects: time.

Summer reveals exactly what is, and isn’t, working in your Mallorca home.

Perhaps guests have nowhere to put their belongings, the kitchen becomes crowded, outdoor spaces aren’t used as much as they could be, or certain rooms simply don’t support the way you live.

A guest bedroom should never feel like the room where everything else ended up.

When your home is full during the summer, you quickly discover whether your guest accommodation genuinely works. Can your guests unpack? Is there somewhere to put a suitcase, hang their clothes, make a cup of coffee or sit quietly for a few minutes? Do they have good bedside lighting, privacy and enough space to feel comfortable?

I always try to think beyond the bed itself. A bench gives guests somewhere to sit or place their luggage. Drawers and hanging space allow them to settle in. Soft lighting, beautiful bed linen and thoughtful details make the room feel welcoming, while a little touch of luxury reminds them that this space was designed with them in mind.

Your guests may have come to spend time with you, but they still need a room that feels like their own private retreat.

If having a houseful this summer exposed a few shortcomings in your guest bedrooms, now is the ideal time to rethink them before next season.

You’re good at what you do. But are you actually good at running the business around it?

Do you know what you should be charging, or are you still picking a number and hoping the client doesn’t question it?

Can you explain, clearly, why someone should choose YOU?

Are you taking on work you don’t really want because you’re frightened of turning it down?

Are you attracting the kind of clients and projects you actually want, or just accepting whatever comes through the door?

Does your brand really represent you and the level you’re working at now?

And here’s a big one: are you still trying to do absolutely everything yourself because you think that’s what running your own business means?

I know these questions because I’ve had to answer them myself.

I’ve been running a creative business for almost 30 years. I’ve got things wrong. I’ve learnt about clients, money, boundaries, confidence, positioning and the importance of knowing what you do well and what you absolutely do not want to do.

And one of the things giving me enormous satisfaction now is being able to pass some of that knowledge on!

My “Design for Joy: Studio Sessions” are my one-to-one mentoring sessions for creative people who want to build a better business around the thing they are already brilliant at.

You might be an interior designer, an artist, a home stager or working in a completely different creative field. You don’t need me to teach you how to be creative.

But perhaps you do need someone experienced to sit across the table from you, ask the questions you’ve been avoiding, look at what you’re doing with a fresh pair of eyes and help you work out what needs to change.

I’m not interested in turning you into a version of me. I want to help you become more confident about YOU, your work, your value and the business you want to build.

And I’m discovering that watching another creative person have that moment when something suddenly clicks is one of the most rewarding things I get to do.

So let me ask you one more uncomfortable question.

Give yourself permission to choose JOY in your home.

It’s the interiors equivalent of dancing like no one is watching 💃🕺

Choose the colour because it makes you smile. Mix the patterns because you love them. Add the texture, hang the art, buy the fabulous lamp, and paint the ceiling if you want to!

Your home doesn’t need to impress anyone else. It needs to make YOU feel good.

So consider this your official permission slip.
