The Archeologist finally got back to me about the markings on the stones. I had hoped that the marks showed early attempts at art by the thicky tribe of Biffie but apparently the marks are made by ploughing tools or natural erosion. So i was right about the thicky tribe of Biffie as they repeatedly ploughed over the same massive stones over and over again!

Obsessed by Stones..
Not only do we have the Aikey Brae Stone Circle overlooking us, we also have a number of stones with “unexplained markings” dotted around. I spend hours crawling over stones & taking photos of them from different angles and at different times of day and have been known to bore my friends for hours about a single scratch mark! Imagine then my delight a reading an article about place names to discover that the word “clachan” was not only used as another word for hamlet but actually means “stones” in Gaelic.

Creating an eco-clachan at the Mains of Biffie.

Our eco-clachan will be a small Community of 3 affordable housing lets & 2 self-catering lets, 3 craft workshops & a Coffee & Craft Shop to provide jobs on the doorstep for tenants. All will be powered by renewable energy.

Our motto is: It’s not about the money its about an affordable & enjoyable lifestyle with a zero carbon footprint.

The Mains of Biffie sits in an historic landscape, with the 4000 yr old Aikey Brae Stone Circle to the West the 13th century Abbey of Deer to the North and the ancient village of Old Deer to the East. The panoramic views are stunning and the Farmhouse & Steadings are built from stones reused from Pictish roundhouses.

It’s really windy all the time on the top of Biffie hill so we will take advantage of this to install a wind turbine to provide most of the energy for the community.

Ground source heating will be installed for all properties & we are looking at new technology that uses flow batteries within the underfloor heating system to provide more renewable energy.

It’s going to be a long journey & we will keep you updated with progress.

Thanks for taking an interest, Jan & Derek
