House By The Beach is a small local business letting holiday cottages in a very small local area of beautiful coastal south Cornwall. Based in our home village of Gorran Haven and along the magical coast from Caerhayes to Portmellon. This sea's edge place has quiet countryside and unhurried, friendly natives. All the houses are close by one of the beaches along this four mile stretch of coast righ
tly labelled Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Gorran Haven beach has fine sand, a stream , quay, beach cafe etc. Caerhayes has beach cafe and fine, old fashioned countryside, overseen by Caerhayes castle. Portmellon Cove is a quiet beach near Mevagissey with it's working fishing harbour and shops. Being within easy reach of a beach and cliff paths, they are highly suitable for family holidays, romantic get aways and walking holidays. This area is still quite remote and undeveloped, characterised by narrow lanes, wild hedges and superb cliff scenery and is justly designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The cottages are all different and each has it's own character and strengths - if you would like help deciding which would suit you best, do phone or email. Gorran Haven is a small village half way down the south coast of Cornwall, with two sandy beaches and a quay. It is much loved by children of all ages and their parents who are quite often returning to the scene of their own childhood holidays - nothing changes much. The stream running down the beach can be dammed and redirected down sandy channels for hours on end. The rocks on the side of the beach have weedy rock pools with impossibly fast shrimps and tiny fish who cannot be caught. Beach cafe and bakery, a pub. Portloe is a little westward - tiny fishing village with a harbour and a rocky cove suitable for to paddling. The big sandy beach of Carne is about a mile up the lane. The surrounding quiet countryside is farmed on a small scale with woodland for pheasants and deer. There is a good pub and a smart restaurant. St Mawes is both casual and smart, dominated by the water and by sailing boats. It is a village at the end of the Percuil River where the sea begins. It is surprisingly quiet and old fashioned but stylish too. Good pubs and fine dining, interesting shops. The foot ferry will take you across the bay to cosmopolitan Falmouth with it's wild art school cafes and pubs and the very impressive National Maritime museum. The area of Cornwall known as the Roseland is the stretch of coast from Gorran to St Mawes and is characterised by gentle rolling countryside, dramatic cliff and coastal scenery and unspoiled beaches. There are no major roads and Truro, the nearest town, is about 12 miles distant. This area is nicely off the beaten track. Locally, there are good small shops, pubs and restaurants and the people living here are friendly. It is a lovely place to live and work and a good place for a holiday at any time of the year.
