Want to learn more about St Basils and how we support young people into independence? 🏠

We contributed to a homeless link article highlighting the impact of our Live and Work model.

For many young people, finding somewhere affordable to live is out of reach.

They are often in low paid, entry level jobs and therefore paying rent from their earned income is unrealistic.

The only way it stacks up is if individuals have a support network subsidising them. This puts additional pressures on families who may also be experiencing the impacts of rising costs.

For young people who have been homeless or are at risk of homelessness, this creates even greater barriers. 🚧

Many are stuck in accommodation that is reliant on them staying on benefits.

If they take up work, they could face eviction. Why would you work if the roof over your head is under threat?

The Live and Work model was created in answer to this question. How low would rent have to be for someone to be able to afford to work, without having to navigate the benefit system?

Critically, this is not supported accommodation, we think of it as supportive. 🤝

St Basils Live and Work Accommodation in Birmingham, hosted open days this week! 🏡

We offer young people aged 18-25 an opportunity to access high-quality, low-cost housing for up to 2-years.

Residents and St Basils staff across the region had the chance to meet the Live and Work team, view potential future homes and learn about the application process. 💻

Anyone aged 18-25 and earning over £1000 each month in work or an apprenticeship can apply for genuinely affordable rooms based in the city centre.

This costs just £434.39 per month. Inclusive of rent, council tax, water, and heating.

Provided is a furnished bedroom, private restroom and accessibility options are also available.

Each floor is equipped with a large communal kitchen area and dedicated spaces for socialising with other residents. 💡

Our Live and Work projects strive to keep living costs as low as possible, allowing young people to manage living expenses, build independence and save for the future.

How it Helps:

Our Youth Hubs are the first point of call for a young person facing homelessness. It is vital to have stock of essential items, so we can meet a young person's immediate needs.

A huge congratulations to Berkeley Foundation and all of their partners for completing an epic three-day challenge from Birmingham to London. This has raised an incredible £82,000+ (including Gift Aid) for St Basils and New Horizon Youth Centre along the way!

The challenge saw the team take on:

Day 1: A marathon walk starting at St Basils Live & Work, Birmingham to Leamington Spa

Day 2: Around 100 miles by bike from Leamington Spa to Uxbridge

Day 3: Another marathon walk from Uxbridge into Central London, finishing at New Horizon Youth Centre.

What started as a huge challenge quickly became an incredible show of determination, teamwork and partnership - all with one shared goal: to help prevent youth homelessness in both cities.

The funds raised will make a real difference, helping St Basils and NHYC continue to provide young people with the safe spaces, support and opportunities they need to build a brighter future.

A massive thank you to everyone who took part, especially those who took on the full three days… what an achievement! And of course, thank you to Berkeley Foundation, Berkeley Group Plc and everyone who donated and supported the challenge.

You’ve certainly gone the distance for young people!

As part of an interview series with young people active on our Youth Advisory Board, Journalist Hannah Ahmed has shared two further articles via Birmingham Live, focusing on the homeless experience each young person has been through. 🗞️

To see the progress both have made in their confidence, skills, education and future aspirations is a lovely read. We are always proud to see young people develop in this way, which is what St Basils strive towards with each young person we work alongside, throughout our support services. 🙌

These outcomes could not be achieved without our dedicated supporters, partners and incredible frontline staff...

But the real credit, goes to the young people for their achievements and we are inspired by their willingness to share their personal stories around sensitive social matters, which will no doubt give to hope other young people going through similar experiences.

A big St Basils thank you to Knowle And Dorridge Round Table for welcoming us once again to Dorridge Day 2026. ☀️

Our staff members Esther and Sarah had such a lovely day on Sunday, the sun was shining, the tombola was a big hit and it was fantastic to see so many wonderful community groups represented.

It was a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of St Basils work in the local area. ♥️

We are very excited to share a sneak preview of Alexander Stadium , the new venue for this years Big Sleepout event.

The aim is to sleep out for one night, so a young person doesn't have to.❗

The Big Sleepout is not designed to replicate homelessness. Instead, it provides an opportunity to learn about the challenges young people face and ensure more young people can access safe accommodation, specialist support and brighter futures. 💡

There will be live music, hot food and drinks, activities, inspiring stories from young people and our staff team. As well as the return of our popular Creative Cardboard Competition!

We are also delighted to announce partners Sandland Packaging providing the essential cardboard shelters for the Big Sleepout ❤️

With special thanks to Sophie Moulton at Big Reputation for joining us to film drone footage and to the team at Alexander Stadium for being a wonderful host for this year’s Big Sleepout event.

Join us for The Birmingham 24-Hour Run (Or Walk!) against Homelessness, 10th-11th October Midday to Midday.

We’re so proud to be hosting this year’s 24-Hour Run at St Basils HQ. A relay event bringing people together to raise awareness of homelessness and support St Basils and SIFA Fireside. 👟

If running isn't for you, you can still get involved! St Basils will be leading a 5km walking lap at 3pm on Saturday 10th October, giving you the chance to take part at your own pace while supporting the event.

Taking place on World Homeless Day, the event is a great opportunity to get active, connect with colleagues and the wider community, and show your support.

The event is free to take part in, and you can run or walk as many or as few 5km laps as you like. There’s no pressure to be a serious runner, the laps are open to all abilities, with run leaders from the University of Birmingham Cool Runnings team supporting every lap.

Fundraising is encouraged, but there’s no requirement to raise money to participate.
