On This Day in 1947: Author George Orwell (who was writing '1984' on Jura) made the news by nearly getting himself drowned. He'd accidentally steered his rowing boat towards The Corryvreckan Whirlpool. Located between Jura and Scarba, it is the third largest whirlpool in the world. Tourists can visit the site by way of boat trips from local harbours.
