In the UK, broken air vents are one of the TOP ways rats get into homes.

One cracked air brick is all it takes. Rats can fit through a gap the size of a 50p and will chew it bigger in one night.

It leads straight under your floorboards.

Don't block them completely - your property needs ventilation to prevent damp. What you need is a stainless steel vent cover / rat-proof mesh fitted correctly.
