Over our many years working in Brighton we've become experts in surveying bungaroosh.
This building material was used extensively in and around Brighton in the late 1700s to mid 1800s.
Bungaroosh is made from a solution of hydraulic lime with whatever the builder had to hand "bunged in" (which is probably where the name comes from). That could be broken bricks, cobbles, flint, sand, gravel or even lumps of wood!
It's been called the "worst building material in the world". But is that really fair? Plenty of buildings are still standing 200 years later, so it can't be all that bad!
However, it is prone to water damage and, like all the structural parts of your home, needs occasional maintenance to keep it at its best.
