I've been to a number of properties recently where there are signs of mould growth in the windows and sometimes beyond - you can see evidence of cracking paint over the radiators (drying clothes) and there's not much doubt how it's getting there - also, you breath out up to a litre of water in your breath overnight, rich in organic compounds; well it has to go somewhere and picks out the coldest bits to settle on - the windows - it's mucky stuff. Top Tip time: we all dry stuff inside, but all that moisture has to get out so make sure your trickle vents are open to maintain ventilation and open the windows for a few minutes too - I hear between 6 and 7 AM is good to get the kids up for school! It WILL make a difference over time.

In my mind, getting stuff done around the house is your least urgent priority about now, so I am going into "listening watch" mode for household calamities and dramas.

It's not uncommon now that all our houses are in the 15-20 year old bracket to see the same things going bad, all at the same time. Shed Roofs seem to be the flavour of this month, given the recent deluges, and it's not a great idea to sit on disintegrating felt (in any sense) as it will only get worse and invites the attention of thieves.

It's not impossible to do it yourself of course, with the right materials and tools (and sense of bravado) but you might prefer someone to just make the bad roof just go away.

I don't know about you but I came home from Spain yesterday to find that all the jobs I was putting off at home (which is what Handymen customarily do) hadn't miraculously fixed themselves.

Moreover, the new and incessant drip from the kitchen tap can in fact keep you awake. Hey-Ho, they say you never really retire.

I'm Steve; a retired RAF Officer and Aeronautical Engineer/ Logistician with some skills to offer. I've fettled Helicopters and Fast Jets before moving on to Logistics such as Air Movements and Transportation management. I left the RAF in 2024 after hitting mandatory retirement age.

I can’t lie - it’s been an interesting year in Cambourne with some pretty varied Handyman + tasks. Like you, I’ve avoided looking too closely at the back garden or the myriad of irksome jobs in January. That said, it hasn’t miraculously fixed itself either.

Been off the Handyman grid for a few weeks, but if you stop training you do your customers no favours.

Pretty soon I’ll be able to offer Domestic Energy Assessor and Retrofit Advisor services too. There’s room in the diary now for handyman services in the lead up to you know what!

My child is 36 - that means nothing to you, except that as a retired forces trained Handyman, I am at home ALL of August!
