šŸ‡ Well… this escalated quickly.

When we planted our grapevine, the garden was still very much in its infancy. We certainly weren’t expecting to be standing here a few years later contemplating what appears to be our very first grape harvest.

And look at them! šŸ‡

Which obviously leads to the next perfectly sensible question…

Should we be making w**e?

I mean, we’ve already got the grapes. We’ve got the countryside. We’ve got the rustic setting.

All we need now is a rather grand French name.

Château Petite Maison?
Maison de Little House?
Or perhaps, given the size of the operation…

ChĆ¢teau TrĆØs Petite ChĆ¢teau. šŸ˜‚

The sensible part of me is wondering whether we should make grape juice, jelly or just eat them.

The other part is already picturing a little bottle labelled:

Vintage 2026
Hand harvested in rural Surrey
Limited edition. Extremely limited.

So, over to you…

What should we do with our first ever Little House grape harvest? šŸ‡

And be honest… are we being wildly overambitious with thoughts of ChĆ¢teau Petite ChĆ¢teau, or is this exactly how every vineyard empire begins? šŸ˜‚

How far would you drive to feel like you’ve really got away?

Sometimes you don’t need a week in the sun.

You don’t even need to go particularly far.

You just need to leave the noise, the emails, the endless jobs and the everyday routine behind for a few days.

An hour or so down the road and suddenly there are trees instead of traffic, birdsong instead of notifications and nowhere you need to be.

You can walk hand in hand through the woods, sit quietly and watch the wildlife, eat somewhere lovely, curl up in front of the fire and actually have time to talk.

Time together without one of you checking the clock.

Three days might not sound like much.

But when you spend them somewhere that makes you slow down, breathe properly and remember why you enjoy each other’s company, it can feel like you’ve been away for a week.

So perhaps the question isn’t how far you need to travel.

Perhaps it’s how badly you need to get away. ā¤ļø

Who would you escape with?

I think nature might have a better memory than I do… šŸ„šŸ˜‚

This morning, while walking the horses from their stables to their paddock, I spotted the first parasol mushrooms of the year popping up through the grass.

I made a mental note to come back later and pick them.

Then I got back to the house, picked up my phone and…

ā€œOn this day, one year agoā€¦ā€

There it was.

A photo I’d taken exactly a year ago today.

And the title?

ā€œFirst parasol mushrooms.ā€ šŸ„

Seriously. What are the chances?

It’s one of the things I love about living surrounded by countryside. Once you start paying attention, you notice all these little seasonal milestones.

The first mushrooms.

The first swallows.

The first autumn cobwebs covered in dew.

The first time the evenings feel just a little darker.

And, of course, the wildlife that seems to have absolutely no interest in keeping to our schedules. šŸ˜‚

Have you ever noticed a little nature coincidence like this?

A wildlife visitor appearing at exactly the right time, a flower blooming on the same date, or perhaps something that happens every year without you even realising it?

Tell me yours. šŸŒæšŸ¦ŒšŸ¦‰šŸ„

Are we all grown up now? šŸ‘€

Well… we’ve only gone and got ourselves a proper website! šŸ˜‚

After all this time of chatting to guests on Facebook, WhatsApp, email and probably every other form of communication known to mankind, The Little House in Churt, Surrey, has officially entered the digital age.

Our shiny new website makes it much easier to:

🌿 Check availability
🦔 Find out more about our wildlife-filled corner of the Surrey Hills
🐾 See what makes The Little House so special for couples and their four-legged friends
🄾 Discover walks, places to eat and things to do nearby
šŸ” And, most importantly, book your stay directly with us without all those pesky Airbnb fees.

You can still find us on all the usual places, of course, but booking direct is now wonderfully simple.

And if you’re thinking, ā€œI’d rather just speak to a real personā€¦ā€

That’s absolutely fine too! šŸ˜‚

Give us a ring. Send us a WhatsApp. We’re still the same people, just with a slightly more sophisticated website.

So go on… have a nose around.

The Little House is all grown up. Sort of. šŸ„‚šŸ¦”šŸŒæ

Fancy a day that combines good food, a bit of shopping, countryside, history, polo and a pretty little market town?

Put Cowdray and Midhurst on your list. šŸŽšŸŒ³

Start at Cowdray Farm Shop & CafĆ©, where you can stock up on local goodies, have a coffee or something delicious to eat, then have a browse around Cowdray Lifestyle. It’s the sort of shop where you go in for one thing and emerge wondering how you’re going to fit the new cushion, candle and rather lovely picnic basket into the car! šŸ˜‚

Then it’s time to stretch your legs.

Take the walk down through the estate towards the historic Cowdray Ruins, the remains of the magnificent Tudor house once visited by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The ruins sit beautifully within the Cowdray landscape and make a lovely destination for a gentle countryside wander.

And if all that walking has made you thirsty, there’s another little cafĆ© at the ruins for a well-earned cuppa and something to eat.

Then keep your eyes open for polo. šŸŽ

Cowdray is, after all, one of the homes of British polo, and depending on the season and what’s happening at the estate, you may be lucky enough to catch some of the action.

And finally, head into Midhurst.

It’s a lovely little West Sussex town with independent shops, cafĆ©s, historic buildings and plenty of places to stop for another coffee. Because obviously one coffee on a day out is never enough. ā˜•šŸ˜‰

It’s the sort of day we think our wildlife-loving, countryside-loving couples will enjoy. A bit of exploring, a bit of history, something tasty, some retail therapy and plenty of beautiful countryside along the way.

And the best bit?

You can do it all from The Little House and be back in time for badger o’clock. 🦔

That, quite frankly, is what we call a successful day out.

Who else thinks autumn is the countryside at its absolute best? šŸ‚

The first signs are always there if you know where to look. A coolness in the morning air, mist drifting across the fields, the smell of woodsmoke, and sunlight filtering through leaves that seem to turn from green to gold almost overnight.

Autumn has always been one of our favourite seasons here at The Little House. Pull on your walking boots and step straight from the door onto miles of beautiful footpaths through ancient woodland. Enjoy the satisfying crunch of leaves beneath your feet, breathe in the fresh autumn air, and keep an eye out for deer, badgers and the busy wildlife making the most of the season before winter arrives.

Then return to your own cosy retreat. Light the log burner, or wrap yourselves in a blanket beside the fire pit, toasting marshmallows beneath a sky full of stars. There really is something rather magical about ending the day with dancing flames, good company and nowhere else you need to be.

The walks are quieter, the colours are spectacular, the pubs are welcoming, and somehow life just feels a little slower.

If summer is for rushing around, autumn is for slowing down.

Are you team autumn, or do you wish summer could last forever? šŸ

Have you ever felt like you just need to disappear for a few days?

Not because anything is wrong.

Just because life has become a little too full.

Too many people needing something from you. Too many things on the list. Too much noise.

Perhaps it’s time to press pause.

Come on your own. Bring the dog. Leave the expectations at home.

For a few days, you get to be completely, wonderfully selfish.

Sleep as long as you like. Walk for miles or not at all. Sit with a coffee and watch the birds. Read your book by the fire. Go out for lunch. Stay in for dinner. Change your mind. Do exactly what you want, when you want.

And there’s something rather lovely about knowing that someone is nearby if you need them, but no one is going to interrupt your peace.

At The Little House, you’ll always have a warm welcome, a little help if you need it and plenty of space to simply be.

No entertaining.
No compromising.
No having to be ā€˜on’.

Just you, the woods, the wildlife and a few days to breathe.

Because sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t having everything done for you.

It’s having absolutely nothing you have to do. ā¤ļø

šŸ”„ Who else thinks that lighting the log burner for the first time deserves a little ceremony?

The days are getting shorter, the mornings a little crisper and the evenings are calling for cosy jumpers, thick socks and a log burner gently crackling away.

At The Little House, there’s an unlimited supply of logs, so once you’ve lit the fire, there’s no need to worry about running out. Just settle back on the sofa and enjoy the glow.

And if you’ve never used a log burner before, don’t panic. There’s a handy QR code that takes you to a little video of Nick showing you how to light it and get the best from your fire.

Although, even if you’re a seasoned log burner expert, please do scan it.

It gives Nick great pleasure and he remains convinced he’s just one view away from going viral. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‰

Cosy evenings at The Little House are officially back. šŸ”„
