🐷 Pannage season has arrived in the New Forest 🌳

There’s something wonderfully traditional about seeing pigs out across the Forest at this time of year.

Today marks the beginning of pannage season, when Commoners turn their pigs out to forage naturally for acorns, beech mast and other woodland treats.

🌰 Last year was an especially plentiful year for mast, with huge numbers of acorns across the Forest. This year there’s considerably less available, so fewer pigs are expected to be turned out.

If you’re lucky enough to spot them while out and about, please give them plenty of space and let them do what they do best forage!

🐷 Never approach, touch or feed them
🚗 Take extra care when driving, particularly near roads
🐕 Keep dogs under close control around livestock
🌳 Allow the pigs to forage naturally without tempting them with food

Pannage is a centuries-old part of New Forest commoning and one of the traditions that makes living here so special.

📅 This year’s pannage season is expected to run until Sunday 29 November.

So, keep your eyes peeled on your next Forest walk… you might just spot a few snuffling through the leaves. 🐷🍂
