Fans off - towels out!
☀ Summer is just around the corner in the UK, as we are currently experiencing beautiful sunny weather, but it can be a nightmare dealing with the heat at night.
🥵 There is nothing worse than not being able to sleep because you are too hot, which can lead to you feeling sweaty and uncomfortable for hours as you lie in bed.
Most people might recommend switching a fan on, but the noise can be distracting when you are trying to sleep and does mean using more electricity so you face a higher energy bill.
However, a lot of people do not like using fans in their bedroom as they tend to move any dust or pollen, which can make a room feel really stuffy. Instead, John Lawless from Best Heating has shared that there is a simple method to keep your home cool at night, and all it requires is a towel.
John said: “ If you open a window and hang a damp towel or sheet in front of it that has been soaked in cold water it can cool the room down.
“This is because the warm air will have to pass through the sheet and turn it into cold air before it enters the room.”
During the day, sunlight will warm up any air near windows that then becomes trapped in a room, and once you close your curtains at night all that heat will become sealed in.
It might sound a little strange, but the towel method helps as water requires energy to evaporate, and it will take it from any heat nearby in the surrounding air
Water from a damp towel will pull heat out of the air near a window before it enters your home, helping significantly cool a bedroom so you can get a better night’s sleep.
How to keep your bedroom cool at night
To begin, fill a sink or basin with cold water, and slightly dampen a towel. Make sure the towel is moist but not dripping.
Be careful, as if a towel is too wet, then air will not pass through it easily, and it will make a room feel humid instead.
Then, hang a towel next to a window. There needs to be some airflow, so make sure to hang it in front of an open window to make this homemade cooler more effective.
Do not worry if there is no wind; even a little airflow will make this work. If you wish, you can hang a towel in front of a doorway as well.
Once the towel dries out, then simply dampen it again, and your bedroom should feel a lot more comfortable in the evening, despite how hot it is.
