We appreciate the budget was tough for many and no one likes to see any government raise taxes but there was at least one positive highlighted in the budget which was long overdue.

In her speech the chancellor said £6.7 billion will be given to the Department for Education to spend on hiring more teachers, rebuilding schools and investing in breakfast clubs in England. In order to improve school facilities, £1.4 billion will be spent on rebuilding the 500 schools in England "in the greatest need".

This will hopefully go some way to addressing the risk asbestos still presents across our schools.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 set rules for managing asbestos in schools and public buildings.
Around 81% of primary and secondary state schools in England still have asbestos “present on their estate” despite the use of asbestos having been banned in the UK since 1999.
Asbestos was widely used in school construction, and a majority of schools in England likely contain some asbestos

📣 Carol Lewis appeals to the former colleagues of her late husband, Raymond who died from mesothelioma, having worked at the Port of Tilbury, in Essex, for 27 years.

She is seeking witness evidence confirming the presence of asbestos in building roofs at the dockyard.

Carol Lewis believes exposure to asbestos at the Port of Tilbury contributed to her husband's death.

Many of our youngsters are beginning their apprenticeships. Those on a path to become plumbers 🔧, electricians ⚡, painters 🖌️, carpenters 🪚 etc. could, at some point come into contact with asbestos.

Last year, the HSE launched its campaign ‘Asbestos and You’ with the aim to raise awareness of the risks associated with asbestos.

No wonder residents of Broxtowe are angry. Despite setting up the Stapleford & Trowell Boundary Brook Action Group, they are still no closer to getting the relevant authorities to organise the removal of suspected asbestos sheets - despite them being dumped over a year ago.
