We’re trusted with buildings that demand experience.

A look at just a few of our recently completed projects.

Working on buildings of this scale and significance requires more than simply doing the job right.

It means understanding the existing fabric, selecting compatible materials, replicating historic details and delivering large programmes of work while maintaining consistently high standards throughout.

Our team has built up extensive experience delivering complex stone restoration projects across Scotland, working alongside clients, architects and property professionals from initial surveys right through to completion.

Historic buildings come with big responsibilities. We have the team and experience to take them on.

We have successfully completed stonework projects at Auchingramont Court in Hamilton and St.Vincent Street in Glasgow's City Centre.

Knockderry Castle has just removed all the scaffolding from the back of the property, showcasing the fantastic work our team has done. We're still working away to bring this castle back to its best!

Look closely at the details...

You may have noticed the scaffold sitting in front of this building in the heart of Glasgow for quite some time.

Behind it, our team was carefully working through some incredibly detailed stonework.

The project involved extensive sandstone replacement and lime repointing, with new stone individually worked to replicate the original profiles and architectural detailing as closely as possible.

It is the type of work that takes time.

Every replacement has to sit naturally within the existing façade while respecting the character of the building around it.

Now the scaffold is down, we can finally stand back and appreciate the building as a whole again.

A fantastic result and another Glasgow landmark our team is incredibly proud to have worked on.

We are very fortunate to have skilled tradesmen capable of delivering this level of work consistently across our projects.

These buildings were never meant to be ordinary...

When you stop and look closely at buildings and details like these, it is impossible not to admire the level of thought, skill and craftsmanship that first went into their construction.

Every cornice, moulding, column, pediment and carved detail was created by hand by craftsmen who understood their craft and took real pride in their work.

These were not buildings designed simply to serve a purpose.

They were built to make a statement.

They were built with care, ambition and a level of architectural detail that still stops people in their tracks generations later.

That is why preserving them matters.

We have a responsibility to look after these buildings properly, not only because of what they represent today, but because of what they deserve to remain for the future.

It’s also about respecting the hands that built these places in the first instance and ensuring future generations still get the chance to enjoy them.

For others to appreciate the craftsmanship that shaped our towns and cities.

We are proud to play our part in helping preserve buildings like these for the years ahead.

THE BIG REVEAL...

For months, most of this work has been hidden behind scaffold.

Now we’re finally starting to see the transformation.

A major part of this castle restoration has involved carefully removing inappropriate cement mortar and repointing the historic masonry using traditional lime mortar.

Our team has also carried out extensive stone cleaning, carefully removing years of accumulated dirt and staining to reveal more of the natural character of the stonework beneath.

When you spend months working on a building one scaffold lift at a time, it is difficult to appreciate the project as a whole.

Then the scaffold starts to come down.

And suddenly, all of different elements of work become part of something much bigger.

A fantastic effort from everyone involved so far.

We’re incredibly proud of what is beginning to emerge and excited to move on to see the project complete.

CALLAN’S GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH.

Callan is now well into the first year of his stonemasonry apprenticeship, splitting his time between college and gaining valuable hands on experience on site with our team.

Working alongside our experienced stonemasons, he is learning the practical side of the trade every day. From dressing and building stone to becoming more confident with the tools and techniques used on site.

College gives apprentices an important foundation.

But the real development comes from applying that knowledge on live projects, dealing with different types of stone, solving problems and learning directly from tradesmen who have spent years mastering their craft.

Every experienced stonemason started somewhere.

It is great to see Callan taking those first steps and continuing to grow in confidence with each project.

He has been a fantastic addition to Stratum and we are looking forward to seeing how far he can go over the coming years.

The most experienced people in the construction game will tell you…there is no shortcut to learning a trade properly. It takes time, repetition and good people around you.

Crafted to fit!

Not every stone replacement comes straight off the saw.

Our team has been working on this curved bay in Glasgow’s West End

Each new piece of sandstone has to be individually measured, worked and hand-finished to follow the original profile of the building.

Compared with standard straight ashlar, curved stonework requires considerably more time and care.

Every piece has to work with the next. A small difference in one stone can affect the alignment of everything around it.

That means plenty of measuring, checking and problem solving before the final stone is fitted.

Once complete, the joints are finished using traditional lime mortar to ensure moisture is able to move naturally through the masonry.

A great example of the craftsmanship that often goes unseen in stone restoration.

The scaffold is now down, here’s the results

This was a challenging project from start to finish.

Working at this height on the spire meant our team had to contend with some difficult conditions, particularly the wind.

The first photo really puts the scale of the project into perspective. Our team can be seen right at the top of the scaffold, carefully carrying out the sandstone replacement works to the spire.

Now the scaffold is down, we can finally stand back and appreciate the finished result.

Projects like this require far more than good craftsmanship. They take planning, patience, teamwork and a huge amount of trust in the people working alongside you.

A massive well done to everyone involved in delivering this project.

The finished building speaks for itself.
