Have you ever stopped to look at Haddington’s Custom Stone?

Following our recent post about the Sparring Goats, here is another fascinating piece of local history found in almost the same garden—and only a short walk from the East Lothian Property Hub.

For centuries, the Custom Stone served as the seat of the tacksman while local customs and market dues were collected in the burgh.

It originally stood near the High Street, where several streets met, before being moved to the garden where it can be seen today.

It may look like a simple old boulder, but it connects modern Haddington with centuries of commerce, markets and everyday town life.

East Lothian house prices have risen—but what might that mean for your home?

According to Zoopla’s latest East Lothian update:

🏡 A typical home is valued at approximately £273,400
📈 Prices are around 2% higher than in July 2025
💷 That represents an increase of approximately £5,400
🏘️ Terraced homes have shown the strongest performance

While that is encouraging, East Lothian’s rate of growth remains behind Scotland as a whole.

It is also important to remember that these are broad regional figures. Two homes within the same town—or even the same street—can have very different values depending on their size, style, condition, presentation and current buyer demand.

Online figures are a helpful starting point, but they cannot see the improvements you have made or understand your particular location.

Less than 100 metres from The East Lothian Property Hub, you’ll find one of Haddington’s most distinctive landmarks—the Sparring Goats. 🐐

Created by Norwegian sculptor Dyre Vaa, the bronze sculpture was gifted to Haddington by Tandberg Electronics, which once operated a major factory at Gateside and employed many local people.

The goats also reflect a much older connection, with goat imagery forming part of Haddington’s historic civic identity for centuries.

We pass this familiar landmark regularly, but it is easy to overlook the fascinating story behind it. It is a wonderful connection between Haddington’s heritage, industrial past and community memories.
