๐DANGERS OF STORM & WAVE WATCHING.๐
Good evening.
Now as we are expected a very unsettled period of weather, it may be tempting to go and watch the waves crash over the shore.
However, this poses a huge danger to our general public regarding our beaches and wave watching, as
it's not just bad weather that brings problems. As soon as we get high tides combined with stormy weather, our coastline becomes battered with huge waves and storm surges.
Although beautiful to watch and capture on video or images, it is also very dangerous, unless you are far enough away and out of the danger zone.
Powerful breaking waves have the potential to have us running to the coast, and our coastline being one of the most exciting and impressive features of Cornwall. When the weather is extreme, it can be an amazing sight,
however, they are also very dangerous. Cliff erosion is becoming more common. This also becomes dangerous around our shores, particularly if you're unknowing of the area you are visiting.
When it comes to our seas, were you aware that waves move in sets? The โseventh waveโ is always a bigger wave, especially when the tide is in coming, and this wave will often stretch further up onto the beach, along the promenade and splash higher up over the harbour or sea front. These waves can wipe you off your feet in no time. All it takes is 15cm of water.
Please, before you head out to the beach, always check for tide times and the weather forecast, and please let somebody know which beach you will be heading to and a time you can be expected home.
So enjoy our coastline, but please, please be aware of warning signs around. They are there for your own safety.
Stay safe,
Penny.
