Stretching across northern England, through some of the country's most spectacular scenery, The Stanegate is the Roman road linking Corbridge, Vindolanda and Carlisle and is believed to pre-date Hadrian’s Wall, having been built by the Emporor Agricola in around AD 78, passing close by Stable Cottage and The Hideaway Huts at Huntercrook, and indeed our own home in the hamlet of Thorngrafton. Here

you will find a wealth of history: an abundance of wildlife: rugged moorlands and beautiful valleys; - spaces to explore and excite every sense - peace to relax and enjoy Nature at her most glorious and awe-inspiring. Whether you want to Walk the Wall, explore historical sites or just hide from the rat-race, Stanegate Hideaways provide the perfect places for escape, where you and your family will be most welcome!

Great news from our friends at Heart of Hadrian's Wall ❤️

The tourism association - representing independent B&Bs, farm stays, pubs, campsites, tour guides, coffee shops, local services and producers across the central Wall stretch - has just relaunched its website. This makes it easier than ever to find and book direct with the local businesses that bring the middle stretch of Hadrian's Wall to life.

Why book direct? When you book through a big platform, a chunk of what you pay goes to commission fees rather than the business itself. Book direct and more of your money goes straight to the people running the places where you stay, eat, drink and visit or the services you use, such as taxis and tour guides.

That means:
✅ More money staying in the local economy
✅ Fairer prices for the businesses that make this stretch special
✅ Potential for better rates or perks for you too, as owners aren't paying platform commission

If you love Hadrian's Wall, booking direct is one of the simplest ways to make sure your trip actually supports the people and places that make it so wonderful to visit.

📍 Planning your trip? Head over to heartofhadrianswall.com to browse and book direct with independent businesses from Brampton to Heddon-on-the-Wall.

Roman Magna | Excavations

It’s been a fantastic fortnight for our Period 8 excavation team at Roman Magna, and they’ve signed off in style with a superb final-day discovery.

Unearthed from a 4th-century context, this beautifully preserved copper alloy Roman belt buckle is a wonderful addition to the growing story of life at Magna.

A fitting Friday find to round off another successful excavation period. On Monday, the baton passes to Period 9, and we look forward to welcoming the team.
