The Koala Hospital has been working with the Lions Club of Port Macquarie-Tacking Point in putting together the Koala Smart program for schools throughout the Hastings and Macleay Valleys.

The Koala Smart program is about getting students to come up with ways to reverse the decline in koalas on the mid north coast and then to implement these projects into the real world with the support of the Koala Hospital and Lions. The results so far have been amazing.

The Koala Smart program is so important that our blue-eyed Koala, Lion Leo as he has been called, has become the Ambassador for the Koala Smart program 😍

Have you heard about blue-eyed Koalas?
It is a rare genetic phenomenon as koalas usually have brown eses. Sometimes they have one blue eye and one brown eye but not both.

Or maybe Hockey Luna?

She was found low in a tree with blood on the head and neck. The Koala Hospital Port Macquarie rescue team quickly responded to pick her up. She received constant treatment and care.

Luna was well enough to climb so she was placed into a large enclosure, where she settled in quickly, with fresh leaf every day. She received daily eye treatment and a course of injections for the anaemia, and was soon on the road to recovery.

Maybe we should choose Emerald Downs Mary ?

As Koala Hospital Port Macquarie writes:

This young female came to us with a very unusual condition for a koala of her age. Her left eye had very advanced glaucoma which is a condition not unusual in koalas but not normally seen in young animals.

Poor Emerald Downs Mary must have been involved in some sort of physical trauma – a fall from a tree maybe? Mary is a very gentle easy koala so the decision was made to surgically remove the remaining eye which due to the high ocular pressure would have been causing her considerable pain.

As the Koala Hospital has many years’ experience in dealing with blind koalas we knew that Mary would cope well with life in captivity as a koala without vision.

What exactly means Koala Adoption programme?

According to Koala Hospital Port Macquarie:
Adoption helps with the rescue and treatment of sick and injured koalas and release back to their home range where possible.

You have a choice of 15 Koalas which are available for adoption.
