A recent episode of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces made me reflect on how much freedom can come from fewer planning rules. Amsterdam embraces creativity; the UK often seems to stifle it.

Is the problem red tape, cost, regulation, subjectivity, inconsistency or all of the above?

Planning rules matter. They protect people, places and heritage. But when the process becomes so complex or costly that innovation feels impossible, we have to ask whether we’re holding back the very creativity we want to see.

Amsterdam really made me question where we’ve gone wrong in the UK.

Today marks one year in business, and what a year it has been.

When I took the leap to start my own consultancy, I knew it would be challenging but I could never have imagined just how rewarding, energising and transformative this first year would feel.

I want to take a moment to thank my family and all the wonderful people who have believed in me, supported me, recommended me, and picked me up on the days I didn’t think I could do it. There are far too many to name, but please know how truly grateful I am to have such incredible people in my life.

Your encouragement, trust and kindness have shaped this journey more than you know.

Here’s to year two, growing, learning, and continuing to build something I’m proud of. I’m only just getting started.

Planning a development project can feel deceptively straightforward at the outset. The instinct is often to focus on design first but in reality, the success of any project is determined much earlier – at the point where risk, policy and feasibility are properly understood.

The Government has released the updated National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) . The key document guiding how planning applications and development proposals are assessed across England.

The latest changes span a wide range of planning matters and will influence decision‑making within local authorities. For landowners and developers, shifts in national policy can meaningfully affect the planning prospects of a site, making it essential to understand how these updates align with future development goals.

Planning Success – Strengthening Year‑Round Tourism in Cornwall.

I’m pleased to share a recent positive outcome for one of my clients: approval to remove the restrictive holiday‑let condition that previously required the property to close during January and February.

This decision now allows the holiday accommodation to operate 365 days a year, providing much‑needed flexibility for the business and supporting a more resilient tourism offer outside of the traditional peak season.

Year‑round availability is increasingly important for the sector, helping to sustain local employment, diversify visitor patterns, and contribute to the growing winter tourism economy. It’s great to see the local authority recognise this and support a more modern, sustainable approach to holiday‑let operations.

A fantastic result for the client and a positive step for Cornish tourism.
