This is such a fascinating map!

It clearly shows the expansion of Liverpool from 1835, 1895, 1902, 1905 and 1913. Including how many acres of land, as well as future plans for some of this land.
This was showcased in 1914 at a conference held from the 9th to the 13th of March at the Liberty Buildings in Liverpool, for the Town Planning and Housing exhibition.

We can even see the planned out Ferry route! How many acres was your borough back in 1913?

🔤Royal Liver Building A-Z 🔤

To tell you all about the building and its surrounding areas from A to Z!
Next up is Bella and Bertie, built by the Bromsgrove Guild! 🐦‍⬛

We all know Bertie and Bella as the famous Liver Birds who sit on top of the Royal Liver Building.
Whilst we don't have an exact date and reason for why they are named Bella and Bertie. We can only assume that they were named this way after Isabella of England, daughter of King John and King George V as his nickname and middle name was Albert.
As I'm sure you know, Bella and Bertie serve as the protectors of Liverpool, Bella faces the Mersey River, to watch over the sailors coming in and out of the docks and Bertie looks into the City to watch over those living and working here. Can you name another myth about this?!

These Liver birds were designed by Carl Bernard Bartels and made by the Bromsgrove Guild. The same company who made the gates to Buckingham Palace!
The Royal Liver Friendly Society commissioned the Bromsgrove Guild to build these great birds on April 10th 1911. Bearing in mind that the building itself opened on the 19th July 1911!

The Liver Birds are 18ft tall, weigh 4 tons and have a wingspan of 24ft, and the Bromsgrove Guild were given one month to make them, May 12th 1911 to be exact. They only cost £140 each (£14,640.21 in todays money) and every week that they went over the deadline they would be charged an additional £20 fine!

They've been on top of the Royal Liver Building since 1911 and they're not going anywhere anytime soon!

⏳We've gone back in time ⏳

Welcome to the Great Georges Dock, the home of the Royal Liver Building.
Of course, it's looking a little different 🤔

Of course the Royal Liver Building wasn't built until 1911, so back in 1871 the Great George Docks were fully in use and St Nicholas Church towered above the rest of the buildings in the city.
The Royal Liver Building had their main headquarters on Prescot street and the Royal Liver Building as it exists now wasn't even a thought!

But only 37 years later, in 1908 the Royal Liver Buildings construction would begin on the reclaimed land where the Great George Docks used to be. 🏗️

⏳On This Day...⏳

82 years ago, on the 6th June 1944, the Allied Powers (consisting mainly of the UK, USA and Canada, but many more were involved) invaded the beaches of Normandy, resulting in the liberation of France, and the eventual Allied victory on the Western Front.

This was code named Operation Overlord, but is of course more commonly known as D-Day. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history with over 156,000 soldiers and 195,700 naval personnel involved.
The Royal Liver Friendly Society had over 2000 members join the war effort in WWII, unfortunately 75 of these men did lose their lives.
And to honour all those who fought in the war the Royal Liver Friendly Society set up electronic chimes that go off every 15 minutes in sync with our clocks, and still do to this day!

Join us today in thinking about and honouring the people who lost their lives for our country. Lest We Forget
