🔤Royal Liver Building A-Z 🔤

This weeks is P for Pier Head

The Pier Head is the name of the riverside area of Liverpool’s waterfront. It is best known as the home of the city’s iconic Three Graces: the Port of Liverpool Building, the Cunard Building, and of course, the Royal Liver Building. 🏛️

The Pier Head formed a part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was granted in 2004 but removed from the World Heritage List in 2021. It served as a major landing point for passenger ships travelling to and from Liverpool, a role it continues to today with its Ferry Services 🛥️

It is also home to several statues and memorials, including the 1.2-tonne Beatles Statue; donated by the Cavern Club, the placement of the statue coincides with the 50 year anniversary of the band's last gig played in Liverpool (at the Liverpool Empire Theatre). The statue is now the city's most popular selfie spot! 📸

Liverpool has had many world firsts! 🗺️

Including the world's first passenger railway line, it opened on the 15th September 1830 and ran from Liverpool to Manchester! That was 196 years ago!
It took only two hours to travel between the two cities 🚄

The L&MR was also the first train line to have a signal system! Nothing electrical that we might use nowadays, but actual policemen on the sides of the tracks who would sign when the trainline was clear by standing straight with their arms outstretched. There were a few upgrades over the years but policemen were still the signalling team until the L&MR merged with the Grand Junction Railway in 1845.

The Liver Bird's construction 🤯

This is Bertie back in 1911 as he is being secured onto the top of the Royal Liver Building!

The birds were in separate pieces, each part was pulled up to the top of these towers, over 322ft, using a rope and pulley system. And then welded into place right there and then!

And they've never moved, of course the birds have always been chained down so they can't move, especially because they're 18ft tall, and weigh 4 tonnes it wouldn't be the best idea to just leave them to the elements. But it is fascinating to see how these incredible structures came to be! 😍
