As the UN Climate Summit of World Leaders held in Glasgow, Scotland draws to an end, and technocrats from participating counteries slug it out to arrive at a Climate Agreement that would drive global commitments towards curbing carbon emissions to net zero, and reduce global warming by 1.5 degrees centigrade, among other targets. These measures if adopted, are aimed at steering mother Earth away from catastrophes, and imminent extinction, as trumpeted by Climate Scientists, and Activists. And, news has it that Jeff Bezos of Amazon pledged to donate $2 billion, just approx. 1% of his total net-worth.
Unfortunately, all of these attention are given to Climate change than to the majority of people are faced with extinction due to hunger, disease , and myriads of challenges (including climate change). They are confronted with overwhelming debilitating socio-economic conditions currently sweeping across the globe like a hurricane, and which is exacerbated by the covid-19 pandemic.
The financial trauma that most of mankind are facing currently is beyond compare at all times in recent memory. So, how can we confidently say that mankind has through his/her economic prowess, accomplishments in science and technology, and perhaps spirituality, have been able to resolve the basic necessities of life; Food, Water, Shelter, & good health ( in view of Maslow's hierarchy of needs) when majority starve in some climes, while wanton wastages are the norm in others... it is time to become WasteAverse.
But, come to think of it, is it easier to survive these days? Is it really true that man has been able to solve the defined problem of basics needs ?. It is true for they few people now exploring to live in the moon, or outer space/ planetary bodies. Certainly, it is not true for the majority of people, particularly, for poverty/draught-stricken, violence-ravaged people of Somalia, Syria, Burundi, Central African Republic, DR Congo, Ethiopia, and Sudan, among others across the globe, nor is it true for migrants like those presently holed up at the Belarus-Polish border impasse, or those on the high meditterenean sea trying to cross over to Europe at all costs...it is time to be WasteAverse.
Some will say, '' The World is 🧐not Balanced '', which is very true. But, it is the imbalance, or the chronic exploitation that is brewing & overflowing conflicts, anger, deprivation and starvation across the globe; so world leaders should also devote time and resources in promoting economic justice, so as to defuse the burgeoning human catastrophes because that is a more serious than the Climate emergencies... Sustainability is People centered...lets start from the 'shared principle, and fairness', as we 'Go Green' and push for Sustainability...
