We lost Patricia Routledge in October 😔
But what did the woman who found fame as Hyacinth Bucket at 50 have to say about the many chapters of her later life?

"Growing older isn’t a final act—it can be life’s most exquisite chapter if you allow yourself to bloom once more.

Let the years ahead be your treasure years. You don’t have to be perfect, famous, or adored. You only need to be present—fully—for the life that’s yours.”

In our latest blog we share the wise words of Patricia Routledge shared just before her 95th birthday.

It was such a pleasure to speak at Ridley Manor this week and discuss the reality of thinking and planning a move in later life.
Some great questions and sharing of experiences from the audience.

Have you abandoned plans to downsize in later life?
Perhaps to 'rightsize' or move closer to family?
If so you're not alone - read our latest blog on the reasons 1.2 million older homeowners did not move and our thoughts on the impact this may have.

The HomeOwners Alliance recently conducted research that suggests that more than 1.2 million UK homeowners aged 55 and over have abandoned plans to move in the past two years. I’d love to know whether you can relate to ...

This one's special.
When a home that had been lived in by one couple for over 50 years get's new owners.
A lovely keepsake left for the new owners of an old map of the area, a photo of 'our home' taken by the previous owners goodness knows how long ago, some beautiful headed paper with the home address and a stamp which embosses the home address and telephone number - back when it was just five digits!
The new owners got married on Saturday so how fitting to be carried over the threshold of their new home just four days later.
This home is full of memories, has it's own particular place in history as the previous owners were renowned academics and pioneers, and now has a lovely new chapter just beginning.
A pleasure to support and guide the sale of this one (as they all are). It's been a long and winding journey, with a lot of guidance and support. That's what we do at Turners Oak 😊

Today we completed on the sale of a home that had been in the same family for 64 years.
Homes are much more than bricks and mortar, but especially homes we have lived in and loved for many years.
It's a privilege to support older homeowners and their families navigate the uniqueness of selling homes in later life.

Do you know why we are called Turners Oak?

I took some time out yesterday to take mum to Kew Gardens. She wanted to see some of the water lillies in bloom and get some pictures for her study.

It gave me the chance to revisit Turners Oak the magnificent oak tree with an incredible story that Turners Oak is named after.

This thriving oak tree was showing signs of decline and disease prior to the great storm of 1987. During the storm it was uprooted. It took the team at Kew 2 years to clear all the damage and when they got to Turners Oak, expecting to be clearing it away, they found it thriving! It turns out that the uprooting process reoxygenated the roots and led Turners Oak to thrive again - and it still is now - almost 40 years later!

I think it's really reflective of moves in later life and our purpose to empower older homeowners to thrive in later life. What do you think?

Why are moves in later life unique? It's so much more than downsizing.
Why did I found Turners Oak?
Is a garden coming into flower a pleasure or a burden?
Plus two very different client stories.

Are retirement apartments bad purchases?
Following another article in the press last week about the huge drop in value one child experienced when selling their parents retirement home I thought I'd share my experiences and advice when it comes to retirement apartments.
I'd love to know your thoughts and experiences too.

Since founding Turners Oak I've been asked many times about the re-sale value of retirement apartments. I've had financial advisors whose clients are considering buying a retirement apartment ask for my advice; I've spok...

Here's our last newsletter of 2024 which includes 12 valuable learnings from 2024 when it comes to moves and making plans in later life.

There's a lot of valuable advice about decluttering and other practical tips out there for when you are actually moving; this is more of a view on what I've learned from clients who are 'stuck', how planning keeps you in control, the report from the Older Person's Housing Taskforce as well as the importance of good financial advice, legal advice for Wills and LPAs and other considerations.

Merry Christmas!

It was a pleasure to meet Phil Spencer last week and hear his thoughts on downsizing in later life. I've written a blog about his thoughts which you can read below.
Let me know what you think.

I was lucky enough to attend an informal lunch at Riverstone, Kensington where Phil Spencer shared his thoughts on downsizing with the residents of Riverstone, those considering a potential move in later life and a small...
