An almost pro bono job restoring some garden chairs that had been left out in the winter for several years. A lot of heat and oil was needed to free the rusted bolts. A completely new set of fabric washers was needed for the reassembly and a poor eBay purchase of these brass nuts. The new nuts were of very poor quality and had to be returned to a disgruntled seller. After all the grey soft powder-like weathering was sanded off I eventually got down to good wood. Nearly 70% of project time was spent in deconstruction and sanding. Losing so much in sawdust meant that extra washers were needed to bridge the gaps in the joins. Then all the timber was treated with copious amounts of Tung Oil which was absorbed like blotting paper. When the oil had been fully absorbed it was given a Ronseal varnish.

I have neglected posting some of my recent work. Here is the sequence of a job to make a bespoke bin shelter. The price of Accoya® Wood has skyrocketed again but it was the customer’s choice. Delivered and installed a fortnight ago.

are doing really well -NOT! Advertised FIVE blades for £79.99, this is third time that I have ordered and returned the single blade which I am charged £79.99 for. Even with the sincere Barry’s email from saying that they will sort it out, they haven’t. So I will keep ordering and returning until get their pick right. And I will keep posting on social media until they get it right. It can’t be pleasing the manufacturer …

From fungus through excavation to repair. Previous decorators had filled using cement or plaster over rotting wood which just exacerbated the problem. The decorator saw the horror and asked for carpentry work. Having excavated deep to good wood needed 3! Tubes to fill this Mariana Trench of rot.

And then there was the second half of the job, four folding chairs that weren’t quite in the same rotted state as the rigid chairs but came with their own set of issues. In the main cheap rusted threaded bolts, broken timber, and mechanisms wrenched and twisted - and of course wood rot. After a huge amount of sanding making this set of teak furniture comparatively light there then had to be extensive wood repair dry flex. It was obvious that this could only be achieved stripping and re assembling the chairs. The exposed good timber ‘drank in’ over a litre of teak oil and then a tin of Danish oil before varnishing. Nearly a hundred new fibre washers were used in reassembly. The furniture will last at least another couple of seasons now.

There hasn’t been much from me on Instagram lately but Spring has been busy. Essentially this job was a community contribution job. This was a real challenge to restore a Beyond Economic Repair/Restoration set of garden chairs. They were in a shocking state. However, after a substantial amount of sanding and a lot of resin repair they ended up looking quite good given their original state.
