Wood i-Restore

Wood i-Restore I restore seats, gates, window sashes and doors. I also make doors. Where I can I recycle old timbers to use in my projects. Being handmade it does take time.

Work is bespoke

A French doors project that the customer wanted in before Easter. Well here we are and the new doors are made and hung. I’ve started with the making process rather than what the old doors were like. Slide 6 shows the old doors, the sealed units held in by gaffa tape, clawed stiles and one of the hinge spindles substituted by an Allen key. As ever Oliver Bradshaw Joinery did a sense-check on my drawings before I was let loose on the machinery BLOQS Early in the peace I noticed that the Meranti tread was a bit spongy, the point of the tread slide is to show that rot isn’t always obvious. The rot was cut away and a new nosing machined and put in. Sealed units were made and fitted into the frames by Hond & Langer who made the job so much easier by delivering to site ‘at sparrows…’. So, new doors in an old frame. Always challenging and not my favourite- but it worked.

My birthday present was this lovely find in a junk shop on a Sunday. It was a very hot Adelaide day on and who knows that I like a good restoration project splashed out $15. A happy Sunday spent carefully disassembling before forty years of grease and soot was brillo’d and washed off. Then some serious mopping using rotex125mm which is too large for a small piece like this. But using the FESTool coarser cutting medium it’s come up rather well. I LOVE the design. And who knew that .co.uk made such design icons over fifty years ago.

At the Jam Factory in Adelaide (open seven days a week). A similar workspace and learning environment to but smaller. No woodworking shop though. I suspect renting a space here is for slightly longer term. where we met the charming Jordan head of ceramics. Very interesting.

On the highway between Horsham and Adelaide are towns that want you to stop. Keith SA has a Landrover-on-a-pole ‘attraction’ it even has its own brown sign. Do we stopped to look lovingly on this old Series 1 on a pole. The reason it is exalted is that in the 1950/60s they dragged anchor chains to clear the bush for agriculture. This is one of a small number that did the immense job of clearing hundreds of miles which are now one of many Australian wheat and cattle plains.

Woodirestore got all interested in this front door. It’s modern keypad door lock mounted on an original door which was only about 30mm thick. It would have been a nice project to remake the door so that it closed tight. But I’m glad that they kept it original. Inside was an exemplar of stripping out the old and making new for modern living. All done to a high professional standard and equipped with quality appliances. It makes one want to expand into building restoration.

So when is a picture frame a window frame? When someone has the imagination to say, hey, look at what’s in here. I happened across this little independent bookshop in Woodside South Australia and found Children of the New Forest by Capt Marriot which I haven’t read in nearly 50 years. And in the process met Glenn and Matilda, an interesting man. I love his sign.

This used to be the loo window (see clip) written on the stock by my predecessor. The important work was to remove the stained glass for restoration. As I was to discover, since original installation a lot has happened around the windows with some very un-Edwardian breeze block infill. A temporary window has been in place while repair the stained glass and encapsulated it in a sealed unit. gave excellent guidance on how to remove the original and then to design the new windows. Tomorrow the arched frame has to be routed a couple of millimetres to accommodate the new glass.
