Recognition matters because valuable work can easily become invisible when we only measure what is formally assigned, recorded or rewarded.

The BWIC Care Legacy Awards is one way of bringing some of that contribution into the light, but the principle goes beyond an award. It is about noticing the people whose work leaves a lasting difference.

This is the kind of contribution we want to keep making space for at BWIC.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing this year’s BWIC Care Legacy Awards nominees. Stay with us as we recognise them.

You can attend events, exchange contacts, connect on social media and still feel like you're doing your professional journey alone.

Because finding people isn't the same as finding YOUR PEOPLE.

The right professional relationships can give you new perspectives, open your eyes to opportunities, challenge your thinking and remind you that you don't have to figure everything out alone.

And it shouldn't only be about what you can get from those relationships.

There are people you learn from. People you support. People who challenge you. People who eventually become part of your story. That's what makes community valuable.

Professional growth doesn't happen in isolation.

At BWIC, we're creating spaces for Black and marginalised women in health and social care to connect, learn, grow, celebrate one another and contribute to something bigger than themselves.

That's exactly what we'll be doing this November at the BWIC Care Legacy Awards 2026, celebrating the women whose work and contribution are shaping health and social care.

Follow BWIC and be part of what we're building.

When we talk about career progression in care, we often picture moving from a frontline role into supervision, management and leadership.

But that's only one route and careers don't always move in a straight line.

Progression can mean developing expertise, taking on leadership, moving into training or quality, mentoring others, pursuing further education or finding a different part of health and social care that fits your strengths.

Sometimes the next step is a promotion, other times it's a new skill. It could also be realising that you have more options than you thought.

You don't have to leave care to grow within your career.

So instead of only asking, “What's the next job title?”

How about asking: “What's the next direction I want to grow in?”

Some of the most meaningful contributions in care don't end when a shift does.

It's checking in on a colleague because you know something isn't right. Speaking up when someone receiving care isn't being heard. Sharing what you know with someone coming behind you. Showing up for family, friends and your community in ways that may never appear on a job description.

These things may not come with a title, a qualification or formal recognition, but they matter, because sometimes making a difference is about what you notice, who you support, what you give and the difference your presence makes in someone else's life.

The BWIC Care Legacy Awards exists to recognise those contributions and the people behind them.

Not all care happens on the clock. And not every contribution should go unnoticed.
