Making Tax Digital (MTD) is coming for most London landlords from April 2027.

Is there a reason you can’t file your tax electronically? The exemption rules are strict, and you’ll need specific HMRC approval.

HMRC aims to respond within 28 days by letter, so it’s best to apply ASAP.

September is often a tenant's first time in a shared rental, and you don't always know your housemates well.

Most agreements are 'jointly and severally liable,' meaning if someone disappears, the rest must cover their rent.

Some tenants have individual contracts instead, though this often requires separate council tax arrangements and/or private amenities like your own bathroom and mini-kitchen.

Don't wait until the next rent payment is due to inform your landlord or agent about a flatmate who has gone MIA.

Ending the Gas Safety Week with a reminder to test your CO alarm regularly. If it starts chirping irregularly, that could be due to dust accumulation, not because the battery is dying.

They also last a long time - the expiry may not be for another 10 years, but in reality, they do break down much sooner. So stay safe, and test it at least every month.

“Rental property register rollout begins on 15 December 2026"- The government has announced the next step under the Renters’ Rights Act: landlords will need to register themselves and their rental properties.

📍 London landlords: registration starts July 2027. The cost is £65 per property each year.
