Champing™ – a unique opportunity to stay somewhere truly extraordinary
The Churches Conservation Trust has done some pretty cool stuff before, but making Champing™ into an actual Thing has to take even the biscuitiest of biscuits. We have surprised and delighted people all over the world with a very simple idea: a new use for beautiful ancient churches.

Take a peek around St Barnabas in Queen Camel, Somerset 👀

First mentioned in 1291, then extensively rebuilt during the 14th and 15th centuries, this Grade I listed building has an impressive rood screen, octagonal font a magnificent eagle lectern, a fine barrelled roof embossed with 35 bosses, and a pulpit from the 1480s to marvel at.

The tower (c1380) is the only one in Somerset to have been built in five stages, to an impressive height of 96ft! It also houses the heaviest peal of six bells in the world weighing a total of 6.011 tonnes! They are still used by local bellringers today and you’ll even hear the bells chiming during your stay 🔔

Do Champing churches have electricity? 💡

Most of our churches do have electricity for lights and some electrical sockets for you to use, so you’re not completely leaving modern life behind!

However, Aldwincle and Wolfhampcote do not have electricity, so you will be relying on natural light and the torches & fairy lights we provide (although it’s never a bad idea to bring an extra torch from home!)

Details about electricity and other amenities can very from church to church, but you can find all the details on our website.

What do you need to take when you go Champing? 🤔

It’s one of our most asked questions, so here are our top tips!

🛏️ Bedding: Nothing beats your own pillow to ensure a good night’s sleep! Our hosts supply your camping bed, but feel free to bring any other blankets and home comforts you need to make you stay a cosy one.

🥐 Food: Breakfast, lunch, dinner and midnight snacks! There are plenty of amazing pubs and restaurants near our churches too.

📖 Entertainment: While our churches are amazing to explore, bring along some games, a good book or maybe a film to watch while you’re curled up amongst your blankets in the evening.

🧣 Warm clothes: It’s no secret that churches can be much cooler at night, so bring layers!

🔦 A torch: We supply fairy lights and battery-powered lanterns, but an extra light is always a good idea! You’ll thank us for the reminder when you’re on your midnight trip to the loo 😉

In the heart of the Suffolk countryside, All Saints Church in Laxfield dates back to the 14th century and contains beautiful wood carvings that originate from the 15th century.

During your stay, you can enjoy exploring this Grade 1 listed church all to yourself, enjoy discovering parts of the surrounding village that date back to the Anglo-Saxon times, and with The Royal Oak next door and The King’s Head down the road, you will have plenty of hearty meals during your stay!

Built following The Reformation in the reign of Mary I, St Leonard's Church in Old Langho is said to be constructed from parts the dissolved Whalley Abbey nearby.

With medieval stained glass, 17th century carved benches and Victorian tiles, it’s a beautiful mixture of craftsmanship from across British history!
