✨️ Here are a few words from the wonderful Lynda, our host at St Mary's in Stansted Mountfitchet:

"Hello, champers.

My name is Lynda and I am your host at St Mary's church right here in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex. Stansted is mid-way between London and Cambridge with easy access from M11.

Built in the 12th century, St Mary's has Norman arches and doorways and a wealth of history waiting to be explored. Church tours available too if you want to know even more!!

I can take up to 5 guests to stay overnight and would be honoured to welcome you. You can even bring your dog!!

Over the 7 seasons that I've been hosting champing, I've met some incredible people and have had wonderful feedback and had many returning guests who just love the church as much as I do.

St Mary's is rather special, come and see for yourselves!!

⛪ Champing at Limpenhoe is managed by the Friends Group. In particular Louise and Tim Lees and Chris Fisk make sure the church is set up for the champers arrival and meet our guests when they arrive. They are full of local knowledge and are on hand if there are any problems or if our guests need anything.

💖 To give you a glimpse of the heart behind your stay, they've shared a few words:

"We started champing in Limpenhoe in 2022 and since then the number of visitors has gradually increased. As our funds have increased we have been able to slowly improve our facilities in order to make the stay as comfortable as possible for our champers. As well as providing a camp bed and blankets for each guest we include crockery and cutlery and facilities for making tea and coffee. We provide hot water bottles and for a small additional charge we can now provide heating. We started off in the summer months only but our church is now open to champers all year round!

When we commenced champing we imagined it would attract a particular type of person. Far from it, we have met all sorts of lovely people from all walks of life, of different ages, and with a whole variety of interests. We love the fact that people often come here to celebrate a special event such as a birthday or anniversary."

It's time for some more FAQs...

⛪ Do I have to be Christian to go Champing?

No, we welcome people from all faiths, creeds and cultures. The building remains consecrated and will always be a place for contemplation, tranquility and peace.

⛪ Can we drink alcohol?

Inside the church, yes. We provide the glasses, corkscrew and bottle opener, you bring the bottle.

⛪ Will the church be heated?

Generally not. The truth is that sleeping in churches is no colder than being under canvas; plenty of layers are the answer. And another glass of warming wine…

⛪ Can I bring pets?

Up to two good dogs are very welcome – or three, if they’re very small…please don’t forget to make sure they are up to date with their flea treatment!

⛪ Can children go Champing?

Children are always welcome to champ, it’s a fabulous spontaneous adventure for children aged from 1 to 101!

⛪ Do I have to share the church with strangers?

No - it will be all yours, for you and yours alone. Once the booking is confirmed and the deposit paid, no other booking will be accepted.

Hello and a very warm welcome to all our new followers! 👋 We’re so glad you’ve found us.

For those who are new here, (short for church camping) is all about giving people the chance to stay overnight in beautiful, historic churches across the UK. Champing began as a way to help support the upkeep of historic churches, many of which are no longer used regularly, while also opening their doors for people to enjoy them in a new light.

Every stay helps care for these special places and keeps their stories alive. Thanks for being here ⛪✨

With the opening of the new season this April, we’re celebrating 10 amazing years of ! ⛪✨

A decade ago, we opened the doors to the first ever champing experience, giving people the chance to sleep overnight in beautiful, historic churches. Since then, hundreds of guests have enjoyed magical nights under the stars surrounded by stunning architecture and history.

Champing is an initiative from , designed not only to give people unforgettable experiences but also to support the care and preservation of these treasured churches for future generations.
