Vastu Design Rina Patel, BIID, set up an Interior Design Consultancy providing services to residential developments in 1999.

Completed projects include city apartments, large scale extensions and new build houses. Rina works closely with her clients to understand their requirements, lifestyle and personalities in order to design a tailor made home. She aims to make the interiors above and beyond their expectations. She works systematically through the design stages, to ensure projects run smoothly. She aims to keep several steps ahead of the building contractor so clients do not feel rushed into making decisions. She works as part of the construction teams alongside architects and building contractors. Clients share the benefits of her product library and her “little black book” of specialist craftsmen. Rina absorbs the headaches that are so often associated with redevelopment work by coordinating the works and handling the administration of the appointed specialist. Pitching is where so many designers undersell themselves.

On Tuesday 13 October I’m joining the Pitch perfect panel at Decorex to talk about how to sell yourself, price your worth and walk into a client pitch with confidence.

I’ll be on stage with Katy Stevenson-Bretton of Katy Stevenson Bretton and Elliott-Jarvis Green of Elliott Green , moderated by Elspeth Pridham of Elspeth Pridham | The Insider

If you’ve ever undercharged, avoided the money conversation or felt “salesy” asking for the work, come and join us.

Tuesday 13 October, 3pm to 3.45pm
Talks Theatre, Decorex International | Europe’s Luxury Interior Design Show

Add it to your Decorex schedule and come and say hello afterwards.

Most people assume interior designers spend their lives choosing pretty things…

They aren’t wrong.

What makes a space feel as though an interior designer has touched it?

Is it the furniture you would never know existed if you didn’t work in the design world?

Is it the way one room flows into the next or the light that cascades through the heart of the staircase?

Or is it the storage you never see, the flooring you could not source from a high street retailer or the moment the outside and the inside become one?

A luxury home built without design at the forefront can feature everything and anything money can buy and still feel as though something is missing.

Good design is rarely the most obvious feature in a home… it is what brings everything together.

Every project starts with a box.

Long before the mood boards, before a single colour is chosen, there’s a box in my studio filling up.

I collect these from the very start and let the inspiration gather until we begin to create the mood boards.

“I see this as my house until I hand you the keys.”

I say this to every client. Not because I want to take over their home, but because I need to mentally live in it before they do.

These details are the difference between a room that simply looks good and one that feels instinctively easy to live in.

From the moment my clients wake up to the moment they return to bed, I imagine how they will move through every room. A busy Monday morning. A slow Sunday evening. Children rushing out of the door. Friends arriving for dinner. Someone trying to find a quiet corner when the house is full.

I do not only think about how they live now. I consider how that life might change.

My own children are now 21 and 23, so I have lived through babies, toddlers, school years, teenagers and young adults. I know how quickly the needs of a family evolve and how differently a house must work at each stage.

That experience allows me to anticipate details my clients may not yet have considered. Not because I know their lives better than they do, but because I have learned to ask what the house may need to do for them in five, ten or even twenty years’ time.

Good design is not simply about how a house looks when the photographs are taken. It is about whether the light is where your hand reaches for it in the dark. Whether there is a socket exactly where you need one. Whether your coffee table is within easy reach when you are curled up on the sofa. Whether the house supports the family living in it today and the family they are still becoming.

So, until I hand over that final key, I see the house as though it were mine. And by then, I hope it feels entirely theirs.

Marquetry is one of the oldest decorative crafts there is.

It uses thin slivers of wood veneer or sometimes other materials such as mother of pearl.

Each piece cut and fitted together like a puzzle to build pattern, texture and depth you simply cannot get any other way.
