Rounded the bend and nearly walked straight into her. She was standing dead centre of the track with those big ears pointed right at me, completely unfazed. I got a good long look before she wandered off to carry on with her morning.

Held a hand out and this lamb came straight over, then stood there like it had all the time in the world while I scratched behind its ears. The friendly ones always seem to know exactly where the good spot is. Not the worst way to be interrupted on a walk near Newtonmore.

Stood out in the heather this morning and watched the sun punch a hole in the cloud for about sixty seconds. Those beams came down over the low ground and then it all sealed back up again like nothing had happened. You learn to have the phone ready round here.

Step outside and there's a decent chance this hen turns up at your feet, head tipped to one side, waiting to see what you're up to. The white one behind her is far more cautious, but this one's never met a camera she didn't want a closer look at. Some of the eggs end up on the breakfast table at the guest house, so she's earning her keep.

This one comes right up to the window most mornings. The feeder's stuck to the glass so you get a proper close-up, whiskers and all, while he works through the tray. Guests here are very likely to see the red squirrels, but I never quite get tired of it myself.

The spear thistle is a funny thing. That purple tuft is soft enough to be worth a photo, but try getting close and the plant makes its feelings very clear. The bees don't seem bothered, mind. They work away at it while the rest of us keep a respectful distance.

Came across this fly agaric coming up through the moss, red as a postbox and impossible to miss. It's the classic toadstool from every fairytale you can think of, and one you very much don't want on your plate. I gave it a good look and left it be.
