The lanes are busier at half past eight again. The water empties of holidaymakers and goes back to the rowers and the dog walkers. The village halls fill with things starting up after the summer.

The assumption is that the year's real selling happens in spring. After years of doing this in Rutland, we would put it differently. September buyers are serious. The summer browsing is over, the holidays are behind them, minds made up and a clear run to Christmas.

Seventy ales, five days, one town.

The Rutland Beer Festival is back at the Grainstore from Thursday 27 to Monday 31 August. More than seventy real ales, traditional ciders, live music every day and the barbecue going. Entry is free; the £5 is a deposit on the commemorative glass, and most people seem to come home with the glass.

Some towns have a festival. Oakham has a brewery with a festival attached, a short walk from Market Place, and a Bank Holiday that plans itself.
