HOW TO IDENTIFY SURFACES IN YOUR CLIENT’S HOME

HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR CLIENT’S
COUNTERTOPS

1. GRANITE (Natural Stone)
How to tell:
Natural, random pattern (no repeats)
Speckles + veins throughout
Usually glossy but can be matte
Cold to the touch- if its cold it's real!

2. QUARTZ (Engineered Stone)
How to tell:
VERY consistent pattern
Looks “perfect” or man-made
No pits or natural imperfections
Usually bright whites, soft veining
If it looks too perfect to be natural… it’s quartz.

3. MARBLE (Natural Stone)
How to tell:
Soft, flowing veins (NOT speckled)
Usually white, gray, or beige
Can look cloudy or “smoky”
Often has dull spots (etching)
If you see water spots or dull marks, it’s probably marble.

4. LAMINATE (Formica)
How to tell:
Pattern looks printed (not deep)
You’ll see a seam or edge wrap
Lightweight feel
Not cold like stone
Check the edge—if it’s wrapped or peeling, it’s laminate.

5. SOLID SURFACE (Corian-style)
How to tell:
Seamless (especially around sinks)
Matte or satin finish
Feels softer than stone
Can be lightly scratched/sanded
If the sink is built in with no seam, it’s likely solid surface.

WHY THIS MATTERS
Using the wrong cleaner can:
Etch stone (marble)
Strip sealant (granite)
Scratch surfaces
Void warranties

As a professional cleaner, this is something you NEED to know.
The wrong product on the wrong surface will cause damage.
