Which city would you still pay to visit? Oslo tops the 2026 Post Office survey at £734. Follow the changing costs from 2023 to 2026 for this year’s five priciest surveyed cities, plus former leader Amsterdam.

These are 12-item city-break baskets including two hotel nights for two, not complete holiday budgets. Flights are excluded. Prices are annual survey snapshots in GBP; Oslo wasn’t surveyed in 2023.

What does a day in Rome actually cost? Here’s one adult’s example basket at listed prices: €53.00. Save the receipt 🇮🇹

☕ Espresso + cornetto — €5.00
🚇 Two metro fares — €3.00
🍕 Margherita pizza + drink — €13.00
🏛️ Colosseum ticket — €18.00
🍝 Carbonara — €12.50
💧 Water, 500 ml — €1.50

Food and water use Tassoni Roma’s published menu on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II: espresso €2.50 + cornetto €2.50, its pizza-and-drink combo, one carbonara and one bottle of water.

Transport is two separately chargeable €1.50 ATAC BIT fares via Tap&Go, plus walking. Each BIT allows one metro journey under ATAC’s conditions. This is not an unlimited day pass.

The €18 official standard ticket includes the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine. Timed entry is required for the Colosseum; arena, underground, attic and guided-tour upgrades are excluded. Availability varies.

This is a selected menu-price basket, not Rome’s average or a receipt from a trip we purchased. Hotels, flights, airport transfers, extra purchases, tips and any unlisted table/service charges are excluded. Tassoni’s menu does not state its update date or service-charge treatment; the total is not a guaranteed final bill.

Same country. Almost the same annual tourists. A VERY different December. ☀️

The Canary Islands and Balearic Islands each received around 15.7 million international tourist arrivals in 2025.

But in December? The Canaries welcomed 1.45 million, compared with 195,000 in the Balearics. That’s 7.4× as many.

Look south for a clue: the Canaries sit off northwest Africa, and winter sun helps keep visitors coming. Typical December daytime highs are around 23°C at Tenerife South versus 16°C at Palma.

Japan’s travel story flipped 🇯🇵

In 2010, Japan recorded 8.6 million visitor arrivals and 16.6 million Japanese trips abroad. Watch the lines cross, plunge during the pandemic, then climb again.

By 2025, visitor arrivals hit a record 42.7 million — almost five times the 2010 figure.
