Working through the night to ensure the railway is safe and ready to reopen before the city wakes again.

Track geometry checks carried out using the Trimble GEDO system, verifying cant, gauge and alignment to keep the network running safely and smoothly.

It’s work that rarely gets seen, but it plays a critical role in keeping the railway moving.

Excited to get underway with OTX monitoring on the Eastham Wall project for Morgan Sindall.

We’ll be continuously monitoring the existing structure while new foundations are augered and poured, ensuring any movement is detected early and reported clearly to the delivery team.

For this project we’re utilising the Trimble SX12, whose integrated high-resolution imaging and scanning capabilities allow us to rapidly and accurately observe monitoring targets even in heavily congested and restricted areas. This significantly speeds up data capture without compromising precision.

As standard, our deliverables will also include a complementary laser scan from the SX12, producing a detailed point cloud with all monitoring point locations embedded. This gives the client an intuitive visual reference of exactly where each monitored point sits within the wider structure and surrounding environment.

Looking forward to supporting the team and keeping a close eye on the structure as works progress.

I’ve learned to expect the unexpected when working with Yang Gao on the railway!

On a Friday afternoon like this, sometimes all you can do is laugh and get on with it.

Today we were out surveying heavily backed-up track drainage in preparation for a full overhaul of the existing system. Challenging conditions underfoot, but exactly the kind of environment where good kit and good teamwork make all the difference.

Huge thanks to the Pod-Trak team for clearing the way so we could safely access and survey the area.

And credit where it’s due – the Trimble R12i performed flawlessly, delivering excellent precision even in tough, obstructed conditions.

Looking forward to seeing the improvements this drainage upgrade will bring.

Night Shift Precision at Basingstoke 🚉🌙

A productive night at Basingstoke Station, working alongside Chasing Millimetres Ltd on behalf of YG Rail — carrying out a full track and topographical survey.

Using the Trimble GEDO CE track trolley to capture precise geometry and alignment data — every millimetre counts when it comes to rail accuracy.

Always satisfying to see clean, consistent results come together after a long night’s shift on the rails.

📍 A Small Update with a Big Impact — Trimble Access Auto Resection

Anyone who’s ever stepped in to cover a survey shift knows the feeling: you’re handed a list of control points, but you’ve got no idea where they are or what they’re named. The stress, the delays — it’s not exactly the ideal start to the day.

That’s why the new Auto Resection feature in Trimble Access is such a smart addition.

Now, instead of wasting time hunting for control, you can:

1. Set up and level your instrument
2. Apply atmospheric corrections
3. Enter a station ID
4. Observe any visible prisms or targets

Trimble does the rest — automatically calculating your position without needing predefined control point names. It’s fast, intuitive, and eliminates one of the most frustrating bottlenecks in the field.

To make it even clearer, I’ve attached a dummy setup video showing exactly how it works — give it a watch!

I only discovered this update thanks to Lloyd Wilkinson at KOREC who (once again) answered my call when I probably should’ve rung tech support!

This feature won’t just make life easier — it raises the standard for efficiency in the field. Highly recommended for any surveyor or engineer using Trimble gear.

Signal Sighting with a drone?

Another Successful Drone Flight Completed! 🚀

Pinpoint Accuracy has just completed another drone flight for signal sighting on the railway — this time using the cutting-edge Matrice 4E drone.

For those unfamiliar, signal sighting is the process of ensuring railway signals are positioned for maximum visibility and safety from the driver’s viewpoint. Traditionally, this involves physically placing sighting boards or signals on site and having staff observe from trackside or from the cab of a train — a method that can be time-consuming, disruptive, and often hazardous.

Using drones, we can now conduct these assessments more safely, quickly, and accurately — capturing high-resolution aerial footage from the driver’s perspective, without disrupting operations or requiring boots on ballast.

This innovation was the brainchild of John Hilliard from Engineering Integration, who worked closely with me to refine the practical side of the drone sighting process. John has also gone above and beyond to influence industry standards, with his work already changing official practices on the DLR.

🔦 Precision at Night: Topo Survey at DLR Tower Gateway Station for IJM 🔦

Last night, I had the privilege of conducting a topo survey over at the DLR Tower Gateway for IJM, utilizing the powerful scanning function on the Trimble SX12 Multi-Station. 🌙

Despite the challenges of working under the cover of darkness, the Trimble SX12 delivered pinpoint accuracy, capturing detailed data with remarkable efficiency. The integrated scanning capabilities of the instrument allowed for an incredibly precise 3D survey, ensuring all critical points were captured in real time.

It’s always rewarding to see how technology can help us achieve high standards of accuracy even in challenging environments. Looking forward to seeing how this data will contribute to the ongoing development.

Today we successfully completed a track trolley survey for Morgan Sindall at Beckton DLR Depot, focusing on the Wheel Lathe Building.

Using the Trimble GEDO system alongside an S9 0.5” Total Station, we achieved pinpoint-accuracy in recording crucial baseline data to support the upcoming pile mat excavation, running parallel to the Wheel Lathe Building. This baseline will be vital for ongoing monitoring throughout the Road 6 excavation works.

Proud to play a part in delivering precise and reliable surveying data that helps keep major infrastructure projects moving forward safely and efficiently. Great collaboration on-site today — looking forward to the next stages!
