It's OK to give away that book that you just can't bring yourself to finish. It feels so wrong, but I promise, it's OK.

Even if it says "one of the best crime novels I have ever read" on the cover. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, David Peace.

You'll feel better when you don't catch sight of it on the bookshelf anymore and get that twinge of guilt, mentally adding it to your already-too-long list of things you "should do".

Look, all I’m saying is that if cheese producers had not intended an entire Camembert to = 1 portion, then they shouldn’t have put it in a single serving container.

Enjoy your weekend!

Does everyone have a version of a thing that just doesn't work particularly well or annoys you in some way, but for some reason you haven't replaced?

Mine was a spatula that I used for omlettes, but it had a snaggy bit on it that always ripped the omlette.

Well, last week I replaced that spatula and had a fantastic omlette. Silicone spatulas are brilliant!

Reminder - make sure you get rid of the annoying thing once you have replaced it! Also true for clothes that kind of just don't fit, uncomfortable shoes, fiddly tin openers, cake tins that are an odd size, handbags where the straps keep falling off your shoulders ....

Replace the thing. Improve your quality of life! Sometimes decluttering is not about a huge box of things. Sometimes it's just one thing.

Hey, this is your reminder that there's something that you've run out of that you didn't put on the shopping list yet.

Mine is bananas. And yoghurt, actually.

And tomatoes for that soup I was going to make.

Not sponsored, but I use Anylist for groceries, mainly because it works with Alexa, I can share it with my family so my son can add cereal and pot noodles on an daily basis, and it's free.

Chickpea pasta update.

It was ….. unholy. Cursed.

It lacked the structural integrity to be pasta.

It was every shade of wrong.

On the upside, decluttered my future cupboards from excess pasta types.

But really, absolute filth.

As part of the kitchen cupboard clearout, I discovered a packet of chickpea pasta. No doubt a relic from a particularly ambitious low-carb day, some time ago.

I’m now decluttering it and taking bets on whether the teen will notice.

Place your bets now!

This is your cue to collect wool jumpers (in my case) or anything that can't be "normal washed" and put them separately from the other stuff. Different place, different basket, different pile. Just different.

At some point, they will be bundled together with regular stuff and you'll regret it.

You know it.

It's not particularly about decluttering, but I just found this wonderful website for some unexpected dopamine. Beautifully random. In the last five minutes I have learned about the history of emojis, why javascript is weird, been able to listen to more humanised website interaction sounds and found an entire library of shadows for text design. Fabulous for those of us with restless minds.

ADHD is a challenge a lot of the time, but the randomness of this website reminds me that we are also endlessly curious, interested and passionate to share what we learn. That's no bad thing.

Tell me what you get!

Discover the internet and find the most interesting, weird or awesome websites.

This is the first time I've used a service like this (flown.com) and honestly, I thought it would be super weird and awkward. Kind of like a blind date that you would climb out of a toilet window to escape.

I'm not even particularly watching the other folk, but I have crossed off three things from my list - including a particularly hellish ADHD task - insurance 🤬. Remarkable.

In-person body doubling is even more effective. If you're currently surrounded by stuff, undone tasks, sorted-out piles of things and are lacking in self-compassion - get in touch with me.

Neurodiversity-friendly, understanding and compassionate - I'll bring biscuits and emotional backup. We can do this! If body doubling with randomers on the internet can help me to get my insurance done, then it can definitely help you declutter and organise your environment.

In the meantime, please enjoy a picture of a very interesting mushroom I saw recently. Isn't it bonkers-looking?

If you're looking for an interesting wormhole to disappear down, I recommend this podcast episode about forest networks.

And when you come back out, being considerably better informed about fungi, get in touch and we'll declutter your space together so you can try growing some.

With Christmas terrifyingly looming over us - two important things to say.

1: It’s fine. Really. It’s OK. Wherever you are vs the plan you had in your head, it’s absolutely fine.

2: This is more of a public service announcement, but Poundstretcher have harnessed the technology of Sona for the purposes of unbounded evil. It took me several minutes to realise that the generic Christmas music playing in the background was in fact Poundstretcher-specific generic Christmas songs.

Yes. An entire album’s worth.
Yes. I assume the staff have to play it.
No. I can’t imagine they are enjoying it.

As per some good advice I got the other day - when everything needs done and you don’t have the spoons for any of it; start with your immediate environment.

It’s easy to underestimate the impact of looking at an unfinished task or list every day.

A tiny thing. One thing. And if that’s what you’ve got for today, then that is enough.

Is it better than it was? Yes? Good.

Today, I moved two boxes of Playmobil out of the hallway. They are half sorted out and re-built. I didn’t sort them out or put them in the correct place - I just moved them so that I can walk through the hallway without stepping around them. My environment is improved and I don’t have to look at Playmobil and feel guilty about not sorting it out.

Not everything is fixed at once. And that’s ok.

For anyone not familiar with spoon theory - here’s the original piece.

Let's talk digital decluttering. One of my defining traits (I just can't bring myself to say "toxic trait") as a Xiennial (yes, I did have to look it up) as having to use my laptop for what I consider to be important stuff. The thought of booking a holiday on my phone is extremely uncomfortable.

So, sitting down with my laptop and having to do school admin, reply to emails etc is a whole thing.

It's easy to see the space that physical clutter takes up in your space, but less easy to notice the mental space that digital stuff occupies in your head.

Why not unsubscribe from those unwanted newsletters today. And delete the old school newsletters. Gold star ⭐️ if you actually read them at the relevant time.

And if you want some backup with clearing mental space from digital clutter - message me and we can work on it together :)
