Update on works in Backwell 🚦 🚧 ℹ️

Essential improvement works will now take place in Backwell from next Tuesday (7 April) until the end of July.

Traffic management and road closures, together with alternative travel options, will be in place to keep the area moving while the works take place.

From Tuesday 7 until Sunday 12 April, temporary multi-way traffic lights will be in place on the A370 West Town Road.

Then the A370 West Town Road will be closed from Monday 13 to Friday 17 April, between 7am and 7pm. The closure will be in place from the junction with Rushmoor Grove to the junction with Rodney Road.

Diversions will be in place and clearly signposted, but please allow yourself extra time if you’re travelling in the area. An overnight closure will take place later this year, towards the end of July.

Traffic marshals will be on hand to support access for residents and businesses during the works and there'll be emergency access at all times.

🚍 A free shuttle bus service will be available during the closure. It'll run from Nailsea Link Road along Trendlewood to Backwell railway station, Flax Bourton, Colliters Way then the A38 to Bristol Airport. The shuttle service will serve all stops on route and will operate every 70 minutes.

The following bus service diversions will also be in place during the works:

🚌 The A2 will be diverted between Clevedon and Bristol Airport via Yatton, Cleeve and Brockley
🚌 X1/X1a will divert between Congresbury and Bristol via Stock Lane, the A38 and Colliters Way
🚌 If travelling between Backwell and Nailsea, you’ll be able to use the free shuttle service
🚌 If travelling between Backwell and Clevedon / Nailsea / Tickenham, please use the X11

We know that roadworks are never popular. But these essential works will include:

✅ drainage maintenance
✅ road resurfacing
✅ ironwork repairs
✅ new road markings and signs
✅ vegetation clearance
✅ installing bus priority traffic lights
✅ a new 20mph zone
✅ a new pedestrian crossing
✅ six new bus shelters

Regarding Phases 4 & 5, Highways improvement we would imagine that it will be possible to drive into the Parish Hall car park. With the temporary multiway signals I expect wait times will be longer than usual. During Phase 6 a new pedestrian crossing is scheduled to be installed, located near the Leisure Centre. This should not prevent you accessing the Hall from Station Road. We imagine many regulars will not be in the Hall during Phase 2 13 – 17 Apr 26 .. when the main road is completely closed.
