Another question I've been asked is...Do you only need to test items with a plug?
The quick answer is no all electrical equipment connected to a mains supply will need testing the EICR test covers the fixed wiring, lights and sockets etc. The PAT (portable appliance test) or better referred to as EET (Electrical equipment test) should cover everything else whether it's portable or not this includes items wired from a fused spur such as electric towel rails, ovens etc although your 'PAT' tester may not be qualified to test these items someone will need to test these.
It's a big issue in some schools where plugged equipment has all been tested but items like the hand dryers in the toilets haven't been and the school believe mistakenly that they have everything covered as they have a PAT testing certificate.

How often do I need to have my equipment tested?
There is no exact answer to this, it should be part of your risk assessment, but insurers are insisting that companies PAT Test yearly despite the guidelines set by the HSE, so we would advise that our customers seek advice from their insurers to ensure they are PAT Testing as regularly as they should.
The HSE have provided guidance as to the acceptable time scales for PAT Testing different types of appliances and it's down to the business to decide how frequent this should be.
Any PAT Testing company that advises you that you MUST do it yearly may be incorrect however the frequency is depicted by your insurers and the level of risk your work place imposes.
Not only do we carry out testing but we also carry out bespoke risk assements for our clients.
Places such as ABnB’s, bed and breakfasts and hotels have a higher burden, we can help and advise on this as well.
