A quick life admin task you could do in ten minutes this weekend...

Make a note of where the important stuff is:

Your Will.
Insurance policies.
Pension information.
Property documents.
Details of important accounts.
Contact details for your solicitor or financial adviser.

You don't need to put passwords in it. The idea is simply that, if somebody you trust ever had to pick things up for you, they wouldn't have to become a detective first.

Then tell that person where you've put the note!

It’s one of the most understandable assumptions we hear about Lasting Powers of Attorney.

Unfortunately, it isn’t quite how it works.

Being married to someone, living with them or being their next of kin doesn’t automatically give you the legal authority to manage all of their finances or make certain decisions on their behalf if they lose capacity.

That can become important in very ordinary situations: speaking to a bank, dealing with bills, managing investments or making decisions about care.

An LPA lets you decide in advance who you trust to act for you, rather than leaving your family to work out what can and can’t be done at an already difficult time.

But you can make some of them easier to deal with.

A Will won’t prevent difficult things from happening. An LPA won’t mean your family never has difficult decisions to make.

What they can do is leave fewer unanswered questions.

Who did you want to look after things? What did you want to happen? Who has the authority to act?

For the people left dealing with a difficult situation, knowing the answer can matter enormously.

We offer free home visits because we know that sitting down in your own home can make a conversation about something as personal as your family's future feel much more comfortable.
