This Dementia Action Week, we’re supporting Alzheimer’s Society’s Forget Me Not campaign.

Behind every Forget Me Not is a story — of someone loved, someone missed, someone living with dementia, or someone supporting a family member or friend through it.

Dementia affects so many lives across the UK. Alzheimer’s Society shares that every three minutes, someone in the UK develops dementia, and one in three people born in the UK today will develop dementia in their lifetime.

This week is a reminder of the importance of awareness, understanding, support and action. By sharing stories, wearing a Forget Me Not, donating, or simply starting a conversation, we can all help make dementia the priority it needs to be.

The NHS recommends that adults aged 65 and over aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, and brisk walking is one of the simplest ways to build this into everyday life. It can help strengthen muscles and bones, improve balance and co-ordination, support heart health, lift mood and reduce stress and anxiety.

For older adults, the benefits can be especially important. Sport England research shows that 42% of people aged 55 and over are inactive, compared with 29% of the adult population, yet regular movement can help people stay independent for longer. Age UK also highlights that walking can support physical health while helping to reduce loneliness and social isolation through local walking groups and shared activity.

Whether it’s a gentle stroll through the park, a walk to the shops, a countryside route with friends or simply getting outside for some fresh air, every step counts.
