One of the nicest things about staying at Running Hare in Windermere is how close by everything is.
From the cottage, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to Windermere cafés, shops, pubs and restaurants — easy to pop out without any planning, even on a winter day.
Guests love our bespoke collection of circular walks straight from the door. You’ll enjoy gorgeous views and a real sense of being in the Lake District, without too much physical effort — perfect for shorter winter days!
And when you’re ready to come back, the cottage is comfortable and warm, with a well-equipped kitchen, self-controlled central heating, and a wood-burning stove for cozy evenings in with games or the smart TV.
January to March tends to be a quieter time in Windermere, well suited to slower days, mooching about locally and time to unwind.

I had a lovely time at the Manchester Contemporary Art Fair with a friend this morning. What a treat to see such a massive variety of art and meet talented artists.
I bought this piece for the sitting room at Running Hare, perfect sentiment for some sofa lounging after a walk in the fells, wearing comfy ‘I’m not leaving the house again today clothes’.
The postcard also amused me and I lost no time sharing it with my children 😆

Beautiful Lake Windermere, whatever the weather. I especially love the view from Windermere Jetty Museum when it's misty. Love the contrast with the golden grasses.
And the cafe has a fab range of cakes including gluten free and vegan!
We saw the mist gradually rise whilst we were there, before heading back up through magical Sheriff Wood.

What’s your perfect day in Windermere?
Mine: boots on for the fells (Orrest Head, Brant Fell — guests love our six tailored walks straight from the door), a mooch round the shops, then Homeground for lunch (or something sweet).

Back to Running Hare for the wood-burner and a box set — I’m loving Riot Women right now (can relate!).

If you fancy a long weekend (Fri–Mon) or mid-weeker (Mon–Fri), we’re only 1.5 hours from Manchester by train or car. Need to fit in a bit of WFH? There’s fast Wi-Fi and three options for desk working.

What do you think of this new window seat in our middle room at Running Hare?
I've always thought this would be a great window for a cushioned seat with views of the park and Orrest Head. Last month a friend who does upholstery helped me make this cushion - or she let me help her to be honest 😆
I'm really pleased with it and hope guests enjoy whiling away some time here on your next visit.
