It might seem a strange time to be thinking about drainage.
After the summer we've had, water is probably the last thing most people have been worrying about.
But that's exactly why now is a good time to look at it.
Once the wet weather really gets going, that's when you find out which ditches aren't flowing properly, which ponds have lost capacity through years of silt build-up and where water is naturally trying to go.
A lot of drainage problems don't suddenly appear in winter. They've usually been developing quietly for years.
Silt builds up. Vegetation takes hold. Ground becomes compacted. Water has fewer places to go. Then eventually you get a period of heavy rain and suddenly the problem becomes very obvious.
The dry conditions can actually give you a useful opportunity to look at these areas while access is easier and identify problems before you're standing in the middle of them in December wondering where all the water came from.
If you're considering clearing a ditch, desilting a pond or drainage area, it's also worth checking what permissions may be needed before any work starts. Watercourses can come with their own rules, and getting that side right beforehand is important.
