MOVING TO GIBRALTAR FOR WORK?
Employment and Residency are not the same thing ๐ฌ๐ฎ
Starting a new job in Gibraltar is an exciting step, but if you are also planning to live here, it is important to understand that employment and residency are separate processes.
Current Gibraltar Government guidance states that British, EU, EEA and Swiss nationals do not require a work permit. They may start employment and apply for residency at the same time. However, employment by itself does not give a person the right to live in Gibraltar โ a residence permit is still required.
For a standard employee residency application, the current criteria also include an employment contract of at least one year, qualifying earnings, suitable accommodation in Gibraltar, age and vetting requirements. If renting, the accommodation used for the application must generally be your main home for at least 12 months and cannot be a holiday let.
This means that anyone relocating for work should think about three areas together:
๐ผ Employment โ make sure your job and employment documentation meet the relevant requirements.
๐ Accommodation โ arrange suitable Gibraltar accommodation that fits the residency criteria applicable to you.
๐ Residency โ complete the separate residence permit application and provide the supporting documents required.
For people who do require a work permit, the sequence is different. Current Government guidance states that the employer must first obtain approval in principle for the work permit, and residency must be approved before employment can begin.
