🚨 Mali’s Defence Minister is dead. Killed in his own home. In the most fortified military town in the country. This changes everything. 🇲🇱
General Sadio Camara — Mali’s Defence Minister and one of the most powerful figures in the ruling junta — was killed by a JNIM su***de car bomb detonated outside his residence in Kati on April 25, 2026. His second wife died alongside him.
Here is what Africa must understand about how serious this is:
🔹 Kati is considered one of the most secure locations in Mali — it is the garrison town where Interim President Assimi Goïta himself lives. If JNIM can kill the Defence Minister there, nowhere in Mali is safe
🔹 Camara was not just a minister — he was a founding architect of Mali’s military government, having participated in both the 2020 and 2021 coups that brought Goïta to power
🔹 Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque described him as someone “seen by some as a possible future leader of Mali” — he was the number two power in the country
🔹 The assault was a joint operation — JNIM jihadists and Tuareg FLA rebels, two groups that were previously fighting each other, coordinated this attack together as part of a newly formed alliance
🔹 Fighting is continuing TODAY — Sunday — in both Kidal and Kati, with Russian mercenaries fighting alongside Malian forces as the junta struggles to hold its ground
🔹 Goïta is confirmed alive and in a secure location — but Mali’s military government is now under the most severe pressure it has ever faced
Let us be clear about what just happened. Two enemy groups — jihadists fighting for an Islamic state and Tuareg rebels fighting for an independent Azawad — set aside their differences, formed an alliance, and in one coordinated dawn offensive killed the man responsible for defending Mali. 🌍
This is not a routine attack. This is a decapitation strategy. And it partly worked.
Whatever side of the AES debate you stand on — the people of Mali are bleeding today. A nation is fighting for survival.
The Sahel will never be the same after April 25, 2026.
