On the island of Brač – as in all of Dalmatia – people have always lived in harmony with the wind. There are 8 winds that were essential to the local way of life:
Bura, Jugo, Maestral, Levant, Oštro, Lebić, Tramontana and Pulenat.
Each brought its own weather: the bura cleared the skies, the jugo carried rain, the maestral refreshed the hot summer days, while the lebić often surprised with sudden waves.
🌪️ Locals used to speak of the “three March buras” – three strong bursts of bura wind that appear almost every year in March. They marked the awakening of nature, the farewell of winter, and the arrival of a new season.
For centuries, these winds shaped everyday island life – from fishing and shipbuilding to the rhythm of daily habits. And even today, they remind us how deeply the sea – and the wind – are woven into our identity.
