One of the most historic buildings in Co. Longford, The ’98 Memorial Hall was built in 1836 as an RIC Barracks by Viscount Lord Lorton in response to a series of murders resulting from his efforts to replace the tenants on his Ballinamuck Estate.

The building was a fortress and a symbol of oppression and was witness to significant events in Irish history - the destruction of the village in 1839, the Land Wars and a Michael Collins rally - until it was bombed in 1921 by Sean Connolly in the War of Independence. It was decommissioned as a barracks and reconstituted as the ’98 Memorial Hall in 1948 on the 150th commemoration of the Battle of Ballinamuck.

The Hall now hosts all significant community events and houses the 1798 Visitors Centre in the former Barrack’s holding cell. The ‘98 Hall is the heart of the community – the symbol of division that is now the centre of unity.
