On Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day of the Devi Paksha, Devi Durga, the Goddess annihilator of evil triumphed over Mahishasura – the buffalo-headed asura – the embodiment of adharma, and thus restored order in the cosmos. The tithi or calendar day of Vijaya Dashami stands for the vanquishment of the wicked not just in the puranic tales centred around the Devi, but in numerous other narratives, songs, and lore in the Hindu tradition.

In the Ramayana, the adharmic wrongdoer Ravana was served divine justice as Lord Rama killed him in order to restore dharma on the auspicious tithi of Vijaya Dasami. Since on this Hindu calendar date Ravana or Dasanan, meaning ‘the one with ten heads’ was defeated, the day is also celebrated as Dussehra.

Vijaya Dashami, celebrated every year all over India, thus reinstates the victory of good over evil and marks the cycle of the cosmic karma coming a full circle for each life-form and throughout the vast and eternal universe

Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India. He was born on October 2, 1904, in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. Shastri played an instrumental role in India's independence movement and has served as the Prime Minister from 1964 until his untimely death in 1966. During his term, he focused on various initiatives to improve the country's economy and agriculture. One of his most notable contributions was the "Green Revolution," which aimed to increase agricultural productivity through the use of modern techniques and high-yielding varieties of crops. Under Shastri's leadership, India faced several challenges, including the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Despite the conflict, he advocated for peace and famously coined the slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" (Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer) to boost morale and emphasize the importance of both the armed forces and agriculture. Shastri is remembered as an honest and humble leader who championed the interests of the common people. His tenure as Prime Minister was cut short when he suddenly passed away in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on January 11, 1966, under mysterious circumstances soon after signing the Tashkent Declaration to end the war with Pakistan. Lal Bahadur Shastri's legacy continues to inspire generations, and he is revered as one of India's most respected leaders. In his memory, the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration was established to train civil servants in India.

Devotees fast throughout the day and break it only at midnight, the time when Shri Krishna is believed to have been born. Temples and homes are beautifully decorated, and idols of Shri Krishna are adorned with new clothes and jewelry. The devotees engage in singing devotional songs, performing dance-dramas known as Raslilas, and chanting prayers and mantras in praise of Shri Krishna.
Janmashtami is not just a religious festival but also a cultural extravaganza that brings people together in celebration. It promotes devotion, love, and joy, reminding devotees of Shri Krishna’s teachings and his role as a divine guide in their lives.
