Festival food doesn't always have to be fried or sweet. We went for something wonderfully simple: a cold cucumber lightly brined with kombu seaweed and served on a stick.

Cool, salty, crunchy and very refreshing after walking around in the summer heat.

When you visit a Japanese matsuri, take a look beyond the familiar takoyaki and yakisoba stalls. Half the fun is trying whatever catches your eye.

During Shibamata Yoi Festa (Shibamata Evening Festival), Taishakuten Sando came alive with traditional music and dancers dressed in matching green yukata, performing along a red carpet leading toward Daikyoji Taishakuten Temple.

It's one of the things we love about Shibamata. Visit on an ordinary afternoon and you'll find a nostalgic Tokyo neighborhood. Come during a local celebration and suddenly the same familiar streets feel completely different.

Meet Tama-chan, the giant 3D calico cat watching over the crossing outside Shinjuku Station’s East Exit.

Explore for as long as everyone is having fun. Then, when the umbrellas are dripping and you’re ready to call it a day, head back to Takasago.

Instead of the crowds around Senso-ji, your ride takes you through the streets of one of Tokyo's most atmospheric older neighborhoods while your guide introduces the area along the way.

You'll find independent makers and creative spaces tucked among the restaurant-supply stores, making this an area worth exploring slowly rather than simply shopping your way down the main street.
You never quite know what you'll find.
