1R 3LDK 2DK What Does That Mean? :
Japanese Apartment Floor Plan

There are two titles, the long one is for story
Ever wondered about Japanese apartment floor plans? They’re straightforward yet sound foreign. The history began in 1951 with architect Jozo Nishiyama when these plans were called 51C. Nishiyama changed the game by separating eating and sleeping areas. Mansions, once exclusive to the upper class, gained popularity among the middle class after the
1964 Tokyo Olympics, giving birth to the 2LDK floor plan.

Start with 1R, a compact, budget-friendly option ideal for minimalists or frequent travelers. Move to 1K for a separate kitchen, catering to cooking enthusiasts at a slightly higher cost. Enter 1DK with a dining area connected to the kitchen. Explore 1LDK, offering distinct living, dining, and kitchen areas. With a little upgrade you will get 1 SLDK, featuring an extra room (‘S’)- perfect for couples seeking a small home office or added storage room.

General advice? - 1K or 1R for students, 1DK, 1K, or 1LDK for single employees, 2K, 2DK, or 2LDKs for living with friends, and 1LDK, 2DK, or 1SLDK for couples.
Families can opt for 2LDK and beyond, combining privacy and a quality family area.

Choosing Your Home in Japan : Apato VS Mansions

The term ‘apato,’ a came from the English word ‘apartment’. The apato trend was rooted in Japan’s post-World War II era. The aftermath brought rapid urbanization and a surge in housing demand, birthing the concept of ‘apartments’ – a Western living concept that is considered as an efficient urban living solution.

In the beginning, ‘nagaya’ or single-story row houses were the norm. However, in 1910 Ueno Kurabu was built – Japan’s first apartment complex, a five-story wooden home for 60 families. Yet, it wasn’t until after World War II that apartment living made its way to the Japanese society.

Japanese ‘apato’ structures, often fashioned from wood or a light steel frame, because of its economic construction costs and speedy build times. Typically classified by real estate agents as 2 to 3-story dwellings, ‘apato’ is known for its affordability. However, drawbacks include potential cleanliness issues and less-than-ideal sound insulation.
Enter ‘mansion,’ a term that deviates from Western luxurious housing. Coined in the 1950s, Japanese developers introduced the word ‘mansions’ to describe the taller, high-end apartments marketed for the upper class. Unlike mansions in the West, Japanese ‘mansions’ are not high-end houses with palace-like attributes. Mansion is an elevated apartments, offering superior earthquake resistance, sound insulation, and security. You can find various prices for mansions. If your budget is 200.000¥ and above, You can focus your search on mansions. Although, there are mansions that cost below 200.000¥.
