Kileleshwa Estate was named after the formidable Leleshwa tree that originates from Naivasha and it is one of the few indigenous trees that can regenerate when cut or burnt. Kileleshwa began as unalienated crown land. This means that no other party other than the British Crown had interest in it and government workers or former civil servants who were considered " detribalized" Africans inhabited the land. The residents were made to pay Hut and Poll tax while shamba owners paid a monthly rent of 4 shillings. In 1915, a European by the name P.E Watchman lay claim on Kileleshwa as his property and thus saw fit to charge rent on all the residents. It was later abolished by the Privy Council of London. Kileleshwa grew rapidly due to the influx of Africans moving to Nairobi and thus the growing African community in Kileleshwa became a concern of the government. To curb this, the government enforced stricter measures on the number of huts allowed in the area and as of 1926, a census revealed that there were only 230 huts in the area with Kenyans occupying only 35% of them. In 1925, the Nairobi District Commissioner warned that Africans in Kileleshwa would be frozen out to accommodate European settlers which was actualized on June 15th 1927 when Kenyans living there were ferried to Pumwani without compensation. They argued that they should have flourished from cultivating rent free the land for years. The town planning scheme forbade any African settlements west of Race Course Road making Kileleshwa formally a European suburb.
