Watching this, I was reminded of something I’m still learning.

I’m ambitious. I’m a realtor, I run businesses, create content, and always have another idea I want to bring to life.

And honestly? There is always something I could be doing.

Another email.
Another client.
Another project.
Another goal.

So going to watch Kent and Talent Gap perform could easily have been one of those things I told myself I was “too busy” for.

But then I watched Kent – guitarist, singer, and self-proclaimed recovering drummer – absolutely own Wipeout 🥁

His son Koby flew in from Columbus to play with the band, and there they all were – family, friends, music, and a moment that reminded me of something.

I can get so focused on building the life I want that I sometimes forget to fully enjoy the life I already have.

So this is my reminder to myself:

The emails can wait sometimes.
The to-do list will still be there tomorrow.

And occasionally, the right thing to do is put everything down and watch my boyfriend have a very successful relapse into drumming ❤️

Somewhere between building the life I want and living the life I already have…

A friend once told me a story that completely changed the way I think about people (especially annoying ones).

He was on a matatu (public transport in Kenya) traveling to a village near Kisumu.

A man boarded with his two children.

The kids were loud.

They were climbing over seats, distracting other passengers, and generally behaving in a way that was testing everyone’s patience.

What made it worse was that their father seemed completely unbothered.

He just stared out the window.

Passenger after passenger exchanged irritated glances.

You know the look.

The one that says, “Why doesn’t this guy do something?”

Finally, my friend tapped him on the shoulder and politely asked if he could keep the children under control.

The man turned toward him.

His eyes filled with tears.

Then he said something that changed the entire atmosphere in the vehicle.

“I’m sorry. We just left the hospital.”

“My wife died this morning.”

“Their mother.”

He paused.

“They don’t know yet.”

Then he started crying.

“I don’t know how to tell them.”

Suddenly nothing looked the same.

The noisy children weren’t annoying.

They were children spending what might be the last few carefree moments of their lives before learning something that would change them forever.

The father wasn’t careless.

He was shattered.

And in an instant, irritation turned into compassion.

I’ve thought about that story many times over the years.

Because most of us are walking through life reacting to behavior while knowing nothing about the burden behind it.

The rude cashier.
The impatient driver.
The coworker who seems distant.
The friend who doesn’t return your call.

We’re often judging a chapter of someone’s story we haven’t read.

The older I get, the more I realize that one of the greatest mindset shifts isn’t learning how to think differently about success.

It’s learning how to think differently about people.

Because if we knew what someone was carrying, we might respond with grace instead of judgment.

And the truth is, one day we may need that same grace ourselves.
