Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo has snubbed Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and his United Opposition team currently touring Ukambani, exposing a growing political rift between him and the former vice president ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Governor Kilonzo, who has in recent months signaled his support for President William Ruto, was notably absent as Kalonzo and his delegation visited Makueni County on Monday.
The United Opposition brigade which includes Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang'i, Justin Muturi, Eugene Wamalwa and other leaders, is on a tour aimed at consolidating support across Ukambani counties.
Governor Kilonzo had issued a pointed caution to Kalonzo, urging him to remain vigilant about individuals within the United Opposition, remarks interpreted as a warning about his association with some figures in the opposition.
On Monday, Kalonzo, flanked by Gachagua and several Wiper Democratic Movement officials, reaffirmed his commitment to uniting the opposition and strengthening the party’s grassroots presence. He described Ukambani as a decisive political bloc that would play a central role in shaping Kenya’s next government.
In a veiled attack on Governor Kilonzo, Gachagua criticized local leaders who have distanced themselves from Kalonzo, accusing them of betraying the region’s political unity.
“Those who undermine our leader should be voted out. Loyalty to the party and to the people must come first,” Gachagua declared to cheering supporters.
Governor Kilonzo’s growing alignment with President Ruto has unsettled Wiper loyalists, who view his stance as a potential threat to Kalonzo’s influence in the region.
